Firewire errors with my Freecom Quattro 3.0

any chance that my firewire errors/problems with the Freecom Quattro 3.0
will be eventually solved - or shall I rather return the external hdd as
defective and be done with it ?

What would be a known working external firewire hdd ? Are the new Lacie
external drives any good ?
