Indeed; dvgrab expects a DV stream or an MPEG2-TS, whereas DFG 1394-1e
transmits uncompressed video.  On the other hand, DFG 1394-1e does
apparently not support IIDC either, as far as I understand.  (IIDC would
suit capture applications like coriander.)

My guess is that your installed unicap version is a moderately old version
which doesn't have a backend for the /dev/fw* kernel ABI yet.  If so, you
may need to rebuild unicap from current sourcecode.
