Using Kino to copy a DV stream from a JVC digital
video camera to a hard drive, my machine locked up
hard, after reading a little over a GB. In this state
the Alt-SysRq keys had no effect. I was running a
2.4.18 SMP kernel.
During the read, and before locking
up /var/log/messages had numerous messages like the
following:
Apr 14 20:00:56 chaos kernel: ieee1394: unsolicited
response packet received - np
Apr 14 20:00:56 chaos kernel: ieee1394: contents:
ffc10160 ffc00000 00000000 88800003
After the lockup I rebooted to a 2.4.14 SMP kernel.
The only difference in configuration was that the
2.4.14 kernel was using ext2fs, while the 2.4.18
kernel used ext3fs. With the 2.4.14 kernel I was able
to download a full tape from the camera, with no
warning messages in /var/log/messages.
While 2.4.14 seems great, I'd really prefer to run
2.4.18 (due to some better USB support, and ext3fs
without patching).
The machine is a dual P3 500, running an SMP kernel in
both cases.
