X does start in other modes (8,15,16,32), though the output on the
screen is even worse than the blue and yellow overlay. It being a solid
green or blue with here and there some signs of the WM.

What about the icons, could this be Pango ?

As soon as I know more about that 'use' flag, I will check the ebuild of
xfree 4.2.1.
