This seems to be the problem (X will only start in 15/16 bit modes)...
but if think i have a very interesting hint:
I mailed the problem to gnome-devel mailinglist. Owen Taylor and Keith Packard
told me that the whole rendering stuff is done by Xft and that there is extra
code for every setting of "-weight". The weight of 556 as on our 320 is usually not
used on other x86 systems. Maybe support for this is not activated in the X server
we use or buggy in Xft.
Do you use debian?
