Hello,
Someone in #kernelnewbies had recommended the
linux-usb list as a place to mention this. The Sourceforge
mailman doesn't seem to want to reply to my
subscription-confirmation messages, though, incdentally. So
maybe this'll work.
I have a USB-connectable IWill 6-in-1 card reader, for "smart
media" cards. I'm trying to use it for accessing a compact
flash chip, again. I was using it for that -- I/O with a CF card
-- successfully, just a couple of days ago. Then, I tried to
use a second card -- after unmounting the first. That's when
the problems started happening.
I'm using kernel 2.6.7. I've been unable to use the reader,
since a few days ago. It doesn't work under 2.6.6 or
2.6.0-pre11 either. (I haven't tried a 2.4-series kernel --
haven't cared to try to dig up the stuff for XFS support in it,
really, though I might find cause enough to get around to it,
yet)
I've tried some debugging steps. I compiled the
usb-storage driver with the additional debugging flag, and
I've collected all of the syslog output from one session of
attaching the reader and trying to read a card through it.
I'm not sure what to make of the syslog, myself. I'm hoping
that someone might know.
I'm totally willing to do any more debugging steps that might
be helpful, even so much as compiling another kernel.
(This appears to be the only way that I'll be able to get the
files out of a new digital camera. The gphoto support isn't
working for it, yet (Canon A75) -- honestly, I'm not sure if
maybe the USB bus has gone bad, but I'm really really
hoping to hold that off, as being a possible "synopsis" about
this set of troubles. I've been using a wacom tablet, on the
same USB bus, and have had no substantial problems with it.
The 2.6.7. support, for the wacom/graphire tablet, seems
to not be working quite rght, but that's a seperate issue.)
As for the problems with this card reader, I'm not sure if it
might be something in the USB code or the SCSI emulation
code or else. Whatever it would be, I really look forward to,
hopefully, helping to get it fixed, much as I may.
I'm attaching the syslog output from a session of working
with it. I used 'logger' to add comments to the log (from
user 'sc') -- so as to describe what was happening to the
reader, before each resulting block of syslog messages.
I hope that the attachment will be good in showing some of
what's been going wrong.
Basically, I can't mount the CF chip.
It seems that, after a run of troubles -- in having tried,
unsuccessfully, to mount a card in the reader -- I can't even
get 'usbview' to show its GUI. It just hangs there (usbview)
after the command, but with displaying no GUI, and no
messages to stdout/stderr. I think something's probably
borked.
Hopefully the syslog messages will shed some light on it.
Thank you!
