Linux LDM v0.0.7 (Windows Dynamic Disks)

Minor updates and tidyups. Low urgency.
The driver no longer creates a partition for the database. It was too confusing.
Logging output was simplified.

The code and technical documentation can be downloaded from:
http://linux-ntfs.sf.net/downloads

The docs can be read, online, at:

LDM (Dynamic Disks) - Technical Documentation

LDM (Dynamic Disks) are Win2K/XP's new partitioning scheme. The docs provide a high-level overview (with pictures) and a low-level breakdown of the on-disk structures that make up the LDM database.

The docs can be read online at:
http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/ldm/index.html

or downloaded from our homepage, in html or pdf format:
http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/downloads.html

Change Log:
The documentation has undergone some huge changes. After a long bout of reverse-engineering, almost all the fields of all the structures of the database are now understood, including the metadata journalling.... read more

New NTFS Driver backported to the Linux 2.4.x kernels!

The initial backport of the new NTFS driver (version 2.0.6a) to the Linux 2.4.x kernels is now available as a patch for kernel 2.4.18. Get it from the download page! http://linux-ntfs.sf.net/downloads.html

NTFS 2.0.4 now in Kernel 2.5.11!

The new NTFS driver has been included with kernel 2.5.11! This means there will be no patches for download from source forge for new ntfs updates for 2.5.x. They will be included in the mainline kernel instead.

NTFS Driver 2.0.3 for kernel 2.5.10 released

Small bug fixes, cleanups, and performance improvements. Update recommened.

Linux LDM v0.0.6 (Windows Dynamic Disks)

This enables Linux to read Windows Dynamic Disks.
There is a test tool to display the contents of the
LDM database (in text and binary formats).
Also there is an experimental Linux Driver.

Most of the changes for this version are in the
code. Now that the reverse-engineering is fairly
complete, the code is getting simpler.

The updated docs for the LDM Database will be
released soon.

NTFS Driver 2.0.2 for kernel 2.5.9 released

This is a small update to incorporate kernel 2.5.9. Also the default fmask is changed to 0177 which means files do not get the executable bit by default. The majority of users prefer it this way. Minor misc bug fixes. Updating is recommended and is necessary if you want to use kernel 2.5.9. Note the patch will work with 2.5.7, too but it may not apply cleanly so you may have to do some minimal & obvious patch work yourself.

NTFS Driver 2.0.1 for kernel 2.5.7 released

This is a minor update, to allow executing binaries on a mounted ntfs partition to be executed. Please note that the patches are now available for download from the Linux-NTFS project page on Sourceforge.net (http://sf.net/projects/linux-ntfs/). The old location has been withdrawn due to difficulties with the web server.

New NTFS Linux kernel driver released

This is to announce that the new NTFS Linux kernel driver 2.0.0 (formerly NTFS TNG) is now finished (read-only). It is for kernel 2.5.7 only and will be submitted to Linus for inclusion in the 2.5 kernel series when Linus returns from his holiday.

The driver has been tested extensively and has survived all tests so far.

It is fully compatible with kernel preemption and SMP. And it should work on both little endian and big endian architectures, and both on 32 and 64 bit architectures. Note, only ia32 has actually been tested and there may be problems with architectures not supporting unaligned accesses. Any volunteers for non-ia32 architectures?... read more

Linux-NTFS 1.5.1 (stable) released

Minor bugfixes and compilation fixes for other arches. Upgrade is not essential.

Linux-NTFS 1.5.0 (stable) released

This release fixes several bugs and contains multiple feature enhancements. Upgrade is strongly recommended.
It was requested for libntfs that a read-only mount become possible so the syntax for ntfs_mount is now changed to accept the MS_RDONLY flag.
Further it was requested to fix compilation on other architectures. I hope I achieved this but I don't have any other arch, so please complain if it doesn't compile on your arch.
See the ChangeLog for details of this and all other changes.

Linux-NTFS 1.4.0 (stable) released

This is a big update and all existing users should upgrade. New features include support for Windows XP NTFS partitions (ntfsfix) and creation of small NTFS partitions (mkntfs), e.g. so you can create NTFS floppies (note, Windows does not normally support NTFS floppies but Linux does).

Linux-NTFS 1.2.2 (stable) released

This is a small update which fixes a bug in mkntfs which only occured when formatting small volumes with non-standard sector sizes. Update is recommended if you have devices with non-standard (i.e. non-512 byte) sector sizes.

Linux-NTFS 1.0.2 features a minor restructuring of the distribution (take out ldm.c and the two logdump programs, ldm is moving to its own package, the dump stuff is still in cvs for developer use) as well as a small bug fix to the mkntfs man page and mkntfs is installed in /usr{/local}/sbin now instead of /usr{/local}/bin.

NTFS Driver - Change of Plan

Releasing the NTFS Driver seemed to be a good idea
at the time, but making simple enough for a
beginner to use was proving too time-consuming.
If you'd like to take over this jobs please email
me. No experience necessary.

Linux NTFS Driver

By popular request, we've packaged up the latest version of the NTFS Driver. If your kernel supports modules, then you can build the latest version of the source, without having to build the whole kernel.
