You can stop here. A single failed hunk means it won't work!

Yes, of course, you can only use the official kernel releases from
ftp.kernel.org. Also note that 2.1.4a has bugs which you don't want so
please upgrade to 2.4.22 + ntfs 2.1.4c...
The new driver doesn't have such problems as you report while the old
driver as Szaka said has so many problems that certainly at least I
couldn't care less about it any more...
