Well I tested again making sure exactly which ntfsclone image I was restoring... placing extra meaningful names in the various snapshots taken. I can restore ntfsclone images WITHOUT wiping the partition with dd, and the easy test of restoring images not joined / joined to the Samba PDC clearly works as expected.
