It wasn't a space related issue as there was plenty available on the cifs
share.
I have just tried using a larger hard disk so that I could run the clone first
and then resize the image locally and everything went fine. I guess this points
to a cifs related problem, although I can't find anything suspect on either
the server logs or the local dmesg or /var/log/messages to help me further isolate
the problem.
As an aside : the clone was of a bootable /dev/hda1 partition, and I copied
to a /dev/hda2 (on a new disk). When I tried booting this clone with grub I
got a disk read error : press ctrl-alt-del. I read something about modifying
boot.ini... is this required, or is this only required if you use the native
windows boot loader? I also read something about the linux 2.6 kernel not being
accurate with disk geometry and confusing ntfstools. Could this be the problem?
