1) There write support at the moment is limited to rewriting of files without
changing file sizes. Most of the code for _simple_ file resizing is there, but
not operational yet. Recompiling the kernel would not help.
You can also check the Captive-NTFS (dead) project that allows loading the windows
binary driver in linux.
2) You are right. the differences are mostly from the $Logfile (the NTFS jurnal),
but more changes are done.
3) Check http://linux-ntfs.sourceforge.net/ntfs
It is far more detailed than any FAQ I know.
There is no need for reverse engineering. The unknown parts are minor enough
to ignore for now.
