In that case there must be some problem with your Captive mount or you
weren't root ... Try to create a file e.g. 'touch /mnt/hda1/dummy.txt'

No, that would be the complicated way. In tis case you should loopback
mount a pre-created huge file as a Linux filesystem. The same way as
TopologiLinux runs read-write from NTFS and some Live distros use home,
config files on NTFS partitions.

Yes, ntfsprogs 1.9.4 is strongly recommended.
