That depends on the USB Disks file system.
If it is formatted with a FAT for example, it may have been destroyed in your
previous experience and therefore I suggested formatting.
If it uses a jurnalling system such as jffs2 (used on many flash devices) it
should have been recovered automatically.
If it uses ext2 the mount should recognized it as dirty and scan it for errors.
ls clearly got into an infinite loop (or a VERY long one)
A format should fix it up.
You can also try removing the specific directory, if you can't afford formating
(why?) but that may leave some inconsistencies on-disk and should be avoided.
