What happened was the old drivers fault. Later, the usb drive's filesystem was probably ruined. The 2.6 kernel uses a much better driver, thus you should format the usb drive to start fresh, and use the 2.6 kernel to do whatever you wish. You may also patch the 2.4 kernel to use the new driver, just go to the download page for the patch.
