The other message means that you tried to ignore the shrink limit what the --info option appointed. Probably you have a highly fragmented MFT. It's a know, documented issue but only recently started people to report this scenario. Well, actually I had only 3 such reports so far. I wrote about the issue here what you could do: http://marc.theaimsgroup.com/?l=linux-ntfs-dev&m=108401439420179&w=2 Note, ntfslcone won't work because of the backup boot sector in the middle but if you're willing to provide the needed NTFS metadata image to add support for this rare, missing case then I'll fix that too. I ran disk defragmenter and it said that the MFT is fragmented 3 times and is around 250 Mb. I used that a year and a half ago on a different computer, and it worked flawlessly. The downfall to it it that you have to install it to your hard drive. In your article, you give me a command to make an image of the data you need, but right now all I have is a bootable Linux rescue CD, so I have nowhere to save it. I shouldn't say I can't resize, it does tell me I can free 39 mb. Altough I guess yours could be even one order larger: highly fragmented MFT often means once you had really a lot of files and close to full partition. The problem is that, the metadata image can't be compressed on-the-fly. There are still several possible solution: 1) if you have lots of RAM (at least 256MB but more is better of course) then ntfsclone --metadata ... to the / filesystem (RAM basically) then tar cjS ... pack it. However probably you will get out of memory at some point. But if it worked and the size is less then 39MB then you could save it or copy to somewhere through network. 2) if network works and you have a Linux around then NFS export a directory read-write and mount that from the rescue cd and ntfslone there. Windows as remote box is not ok because unlike Linux, it would need 80 GB space for this action (Linux SMB filesystems don't support automatic or any other way to create sparse files and Windows NTFS needs to be told about this explicitely). 3) we could save the needed info into the NTFS partition itself by a suitable modified ntfsclone and using the stable, open source NTFS driver (it supports only file overwrite but that would be enough). 4) Maybe by using some external device temporarily? As the first command was running, it says it ran out of space (Ram) to put the file. I have 512mb, so that suprised me. My rescue Cd is called "System Rescue CD" and can be found at www.sysresccd.org . AFAIK, it has the latest versions of all of the NTFS tools. I am stumped on how to get this information to you... Is there any way I could build these tools within Cygwin? Oh yeah, I was trying to resize my partitions in the first place for BeOs. I have used Linux a lot, I just wanted to try BeOs out. Right now I can run it within it's 500 mb image, so is there any way I can do it from BeOs? Ntfsclone should have reported "Cluster accounting failed" error because it doesn't support yet the backup boot sector in the middle, only ntfsresize supports that. I just wanted to add that support to ntfsclone now ... I think SystemRescueCD (tempfs) uses only half of the RAM as the root filesystem, moreover ntfsclone temporarily needs more space then it wipes out (zeros) all the non-needed and user data even from the metadata thus it can be compressed much better. Yes, System Rescue CD is an excellent choice :) Cygwin, BeOS aren't ok. So it seems the only way left is to save NTFS metadata into itself. I'll get back to you a bit later, after some preparation ... I don't believe it did though. Yes, I think you are correct about SysrescCD only using half the ram. When I ran df, it said I only have around 250 mb of temporary space. I might be able to complete this if Linux supports two things: 1. Creating a swap file on a fat32 partition (Possible?) 2. Read/Write to a fat32 partition (I think this is possible) I have a FAT32 partition, and if I (within Windows) move the Beos image to the NTFS drive, I might have enough space to do something with it. Right now, I have to go on vacation, but I will check this website every now and then. I'll try to get you the info in a couple weeks. Thank you so much for the help! (Windows causes so many problems for me :), I would get rid of it...
