Er, you mean 32-bit code somewhere. You need 64-bit code to work with 3.8G
sized files.

This is not a bug in the kernel. When you compiled your system you didn't
compile in LFS (i.e. 64-bit file size) support, either in glibc itself
and/or in your ls binary which is why you are getting this.
You may be better off using a standard Linux distribution where such
problems do not occur.
