I am a Linux & PC guy who is just starting to get into
the core (hardware, OS) of the Mac world. I am
starting with a Performa 550 and have the dilemma of
partitioning a 2gb 50-ping SCSI hard drive. Once I
get this done, I can install MacOS and then get from
there what I need to install Linux. My other option,
is to somehow transfer everything from my PC to the
Mac in a format that it can read and install (or
decompress).

Any suggestions, or do I need to give more info.

Thanks in advance.

You need a partitioning program. Try this program:

You may need to get an FPU (68882) down the road if you want
    to
run LInux. The 550 does not come with one by default.

Typically the MacOS partitioner is run from the MacOS installer disk. See docs on http://mac.linux-m68k.org/ for details.
But you can install Linux without MacOS -- see http://emile.sourceforge.net/
If you have difficulties, please ask for help on the mailing lists.
