If you can get the stock linux-gpib package to work with it then you
should also be able to use the provided Python binding. You don't
really need VISA libraries. 

There is another Python binding you might also want to try:

http://code.google.com/p/powerdroid/

It contains that, and a bunch of other stuff you probably don't need.
