Hi, I would also like to know the "correct" way, I know with vesafb you can specify it with the option vga= on kernel.  Otherwise you can have an init script run fbset.  I think certain fbdrivers can take options for resolution, but not sure about all the timing parameters, check the kernel docs for your driver..
