[Linux-fbdev-users] Radeon (kernel 2.6.7) doesn't show the correct resolution

While my Debian/sarge system with kernel 2.4.26 (radeonfb) runs fine,
with kernel 2.6.7 it doesn't show the correct resolution. fbset -i says

mode "1280x1024-60"
...
Frame buffer device information:
    Name          : ATI Radeon QW
...

Still the console is shown with 80x25 resolution. If I start modconf I
see the following video modules loaded:

cfbcopyarea
cfbfillrect
cfbimgbld
vesafb
aty/radeonfb
console/font

Is that normal? When I "fbset 1280x1024-60" the screen resolution is
switched but the screen isn't readable. Any idea how to solve this problem?
