If you type dmesg | less is there something like:

fb: Voodoo5 memory = 65536K
Console: switching to colour frame buffer device 133x54
fb0: 3Dfx Voodoo5 frame buffer device
pty: 256 Unix98 ptys configured

in there ?

my /etc/aboot.conf contains:

1:1/boot/vmlinux-2.4.18pre8.gz ro root=/dev/sda1 video=tdfx:1600x1200-16@85,nohwcursor
2:1/boot/vmlinux-2.4.17pre1.gz ro root=/dev/sda1 video=tdfx:1024x768-16@75

but you'll need another video= argument.
