The nvidiafb driver is pretty old. Try the nouveau dri tree. It has fbdev support. I run it at home and its stable. You will need a few patch tho for the fbdev layer to work properly. git://anongit.freedesktop.org/git/nouveau/linux-2.6 |

Hello there I'm having a hard time making nvidiafb work with my nvidia integrated graphisc: it's a 9400 series, and it seems it's not supported in the 2.6.29 kernel I'm currently using. Dmesg spits the typical "unknown NV_ARCH" message, and that's about it. Do you know if there's a wider support for newer nvidia chips in the nvidiafb on newer knernel versions? regards Manuel |

Hi, I've got a GeForce 7100 GS and a 17-inch L1730S LG monitor. The native resolution of the LCD is 1280x1024. The problem is the framebuffer works perfectly when it uses 8-bit color depth but it flickers for 16, 24 and 32-bit color depths (in 32-bit it flickers much worse than in 16-bit). fbset reports the same mode in all cases: mode "1280x1024-60" # D: 108.003 MHz, H: 63.983 kHz, V: 60.021 Hz geometry 1280 1024 1280 25990 16 timings 9259 248 48 38 1 112 3 hsync high vsync high accel true rgba 5/11,6/5,5/0,0/0 endmode The same happens for "1280x1024-75"; ie. bpp=8 works and for other values, the screen flickers while fbset reports the same mode for all values of bpp. I use 2.6.31> kernel and pass video=nvidia:1280x1024-16@60 to the kernel; I tried other values of refresh rate like 50, 65, 70 and 75 with no luck. Also I tried inserting M and R characters before the dash but again it didn't do anything positive. Xorg works with no problem (with any bpp value): ... (II) NV(0): Supported detailed timing: (II) NV(0): clock: 108.0 MHz Image Size: 338 x 270 mm (II) NV(0): h_active: 1280 h_sync: 1328 h_sync_end 1440 h_blank_end 1688 h_border: 0 (II) NV(0): v_active: 1024 v_sync: 1025 v_sync_end 1028 v_blanking: 1066 v_border: 0 (II) NV(0): Ranges: V min: 56 V max: 75 Hz, H min: 30 H max: 83 kHz, PixClock max 140 MHz (II) NV(0): Monitor name: L1730S ... The selected mode is the same as the one selected by the kernel for the framebuffer. Any idea what's wrong? What is the relation between bpp and display timings? Any other confs that might work? Thanks, Ali |

Hi all, The linux-fbdev mailing lists (linux-fbdev-devel and linux-fbdev-users) are being migrated from SourceForge.net to a single mailing list at kernel.org (Thanks David!). Your subscriptions to the old mailing lists are not automatically transfered to the new mailing list.To subscribe to the new linux-fbdev mailing list, please send an email to maj...@vg... with the following command in the body of your email message: subscribe linux-fbdev In about a week from now, I'll setup auto-responders on the old mailing lists, to redirect people to the new mailing list. I would like my laptop's LCD panel to switch itself off automatically after a few minutes of inactivity. The /etc/kbd/config file specifies: BLANK_DPMS=on POWERDOWN_TIME=2 The /etc/init.d/console-screen.kbd.sh script appears to issue a setterm command with the above options a boot time, yet nothing happens. I issued the corresponding "setterm" command manually also to no effect. Is there something that I need to configure in the linux kernel? Is this a limitation of the frambuffer console with the atyfb driver? Manually executing "vbetool dpms off" does the trick, so it doesn't look like this is a hardware limitation per se. The video card is an ATI Technologies Rage Mobility P/M AGP 2x (rev 64). Relevant (?) software: linux-image : 2.6.26-1-686 acpid : 1.0.8-1 util-linux : 2.13.1.1-1 kbd : 1.14.1-4 Thanks, CJ. |

That is too new. Radeonfb is dying, work hasnt been done on it since r300 or 400. To get it working youll need either a generic driver like vesafb or uvesafb or ideally the new modesetting radeon driver. It is a dual purpose fb and drm driver which you load with modprobe radeon modeset=1. The only problem is, its slowly being worked into the kernel. Lookup the custom kernel, drm rawhide. |

> > My question is whether vesafb will detect and automatically create / > dev/fb's for _both_ video out options if two are available? I asked this awhile ago, hoping to get the same setup so I could use con2fb. I dont recall being explicitly told it wont work with vesafb but I was explicitly told it wont with uvesafb which is a fork of vesafb so I suspect it only works with specialized fb drivers, e.g. radeon and nvidia fb kernel modules. |

Hi. I'm trying to install 2.6.29 on a new PC with ASUS M3A76-CM motherboard which claims to have an integrated ATI Radeon 3000 card. I've compiled support for Radeonfb and the other I2C things. However, when the kernel boots the card is not detected. It either boots in VESA or (when the vesafb and vga framebuffers are not compiled in) in text mode. I've even added the option "video=radeonfb:1024x768". Grepping dmesg for 'radeon' shows nothing except the command line option. Attached is the dmesg. Please help! Stelios |

I hope this is the right place to ask, and any information available would be much appreciated! My question is whether vesafb will detect and automatically create / dev/fb's for _both_ video out options if two are available? My setup (for development purposes only) is a Dell Mini 10 which has the Poulsbo chipset (GMA500) which is currently in native driver purgatory. However, for my application I won't be running X or need any 3D acceleration or anything like that. I just need framebuffer consoles, and so the vesafb driver works just fine for my needs. But, the GMA500/Poulsbo has two video connections. On the Mini 10, one is the built in display which presumably uses the LVDS of the GMA500 and the other is an HDMI port which would be the SDVO. On boot, vesafb creates the first framebuffer dev/fb0 no problem on the internal screen. Its obviously not that fast, but all I need to do is 'cat' some bitmaps to the screen so speed is a non-issue in my case. But no matter what I do I can't seem to create a (functioning) /dev/ fb1 for the external video. I don't need spanning or mirroring or anything, just two independent (graphic) framebuffers to which I can 'cat' bitmaps. The Dell Mini 10 is just a temporary development platform for me. I am building an industrial machine which will have the Atom Z5xx-series & Poulsbo chipset as its base. (I'll be using the 'Robin' computer-on- module from Toradex.) The Dell Mini 10 has the same hardware chipset, so for its price, it makes a pretty decent starting point for development. Thanks for any information you can provide! |

Hi, I use fbtv for watching TV. To get this in fullscreen, I used the following mode in /etc/fb.modes with my CRT: mode "tv" # D: 49.188 MHz, H: 46.580 kHz, V: 75.008 Hz geometry 768 576 768 576 32 timings 20330 128 32 32 8 128 5 endmode Now, I have an LCD Monitor with 60Hz. But I have no idea how to change this mode to use only 60Hz. The manpage of fb.modes was of no help to me. I do not know how to specify the timings. It would be great if anyone could help me. Hi dear list, Hope everyone doing well... I came to you about an issue that I'm facing... the fbset -i results are not the same as my grub.conf and fbsplashd and fbcondecor don't like that!! let me explain: 1. My kernel parameters is the following: kernel /boot/kernel-2.6.27-gentoo-r7-v4 root=/dev/hdb3 panic=10 console=tty1 video=radeonfb:1024x768-32@60,mtrr:3,ywrap quiet ro splash=silent,theme:natural_gentoo See that my fb is configured to use radeonfb in 1024x768, with 32Bpp @60 Hz... (Note that even with uvesafb, or vesafb with vga=0x318, the results are the same) 2. Here is my fbset -i: mode "1280x1024-60" # D: 108.003 MHz, H: 63.983 kHz, V: 60.021 Hz geometry 1280 1024 1280 1024 8 timings 9259 248 48 38 1 112 3 hsync high vsync high rgba 8/0,8/0,8/0,0/0 endmode Frame buffer device information: Name : ATI Radeon 5964 Address : 0xd0000000 Size : 67108864 Type : PACKED PIXELS Visual : PSEUDOCOLOR XPanStep : 8 YPanStep : 1 YWrapStep : 0 LineLength : 1280 MMIO Address: 0xe4020000 MMIO Size : 16384 Accelerator : Unknown (38) You see that the resolution is not good and the RGBA not good too! It's not what the we should expect with my kernel parameters, right? 3. here is my workaround: "fbset -depth 32" Without workaround: pym ~ # splash_manager -c set --tty=1 -t natural_gentoo No 8bpp silent picture specified in the theme. No 8bpp verbose picture specified in the theme. No 8bpp silent picture specified in the theme. /usr/bin/splash_manager: line 168: 5253 Segmentation fault ${spl_decor} -c setpic -t "${theme}" --tty="${tty}" FBIOCONDECOR_SETSTATE failed, error code 22. With workaround: pym ~ # fbset -depth 32 pym ~ # splash_manager -c set --tty=1 -t natural_gentoo pym ~ # pym ~ # ==> see? No Warning/errors messages... and the fbset -i after workaround: mode "1280x1024-60" # D: 108.003 MHz, H: 63.983 kHz, V: 60.021 Hz geometry 1280 1024 1280 1024 32 timings 9259 248 48 38 1 112 3 hsync high vsync high rgba 8/16,8/8,8/0,0/0 endmode Frame buffer device information: Name : ATI Radeon 5964 Address : 0xd0000000 Size : 67108864 Type : PACKED PIXELS Visual : DIRECTCOLOR XPanStep : 8 YPanStep : 1 YWrapStep : 0 LineLength : 5120 MMIO Address: 0xe4020000 MMIO Size : 16384 Accelerator : Unknown (38) See? The RGBA is good now! So, where I'm wrong? How can I fix the problem? because my workaround could only be applied after booting, so no splash during boot ;(... it's ok for fbcondecor but... it's 50% of the solution... It is possible for me to get /dev/fb0 and /dev/fb1 if I boot into my radeon card and modprobe aty128fb. The other direction doesn't work because my card is too new for radeonfb. But once I do that and utilities say a framebuffer console is on the other screen, and I can type on it and I can startx on it, why is the monitor always blank? I need to know if other people with an ATI Rage Mobility M3 see blank screens when they try to load aty128fb. Thanks alot. |

I read in your rather old howto that having two framebuffer devices, one for each video card, requires the second video card to be a Matrox model as well as changes to the kernel. Right now I have two ATI cards. Does this mean it's impossible for me to have /dev/fb0 and /dev/fb1 both working or have things progressed since then? I can get /dev/fb0 for my AGP card working just fine with uvesafb, but whenever I modprobe radeonfb, no /dev/fb1 appears. I was hoping it would just like modprobe radeon makes /dev/dri/card1 appear. I heard the new radeon driver which requires recompiling the kernel, drm, xorg and mesa has kernel modesetting and could create a framebuffer for my secondary video card. I'm prepared to try this but does anyone know something easier? Also if I do have to end up getting a Matrox card, does the p690 support framebuffer and xorg with open source drivers? Thanks. |

Hi, recently viafb was added to linux 2.6.28. While it allows to use VIA's graphic cards directly via framebuffer, it does not support all hardware features (e.g. the mpeg-2 decoder or mpeg-4 accelerator). My question is: does anyone here now about future development of the driver to support these features? As far as I know VIA will not publish any code about this, because of possibly license problems [1]. Thanks for any info in advance. Boot options The framebuffer console has several, largely unknown, boot options that can change its behavior. <snip> 4. fbcon=rotate:<n> This option changes the orientation angle of the console display. The value 'n' accepts the following: 0 - normal orientation (0 degree) 1 - clockwise orientation (90 degrees) 2 - upside down orientation (180 degrees) 3 - counterclockwise orientation (270 degrees) The angle can be changed anytime afterwards by 'echoing' the same numbers to any one of the 2 attributes found in /sys/class/graphics/fbcon rotate - rotate the display of the active console rotate_all - rotate the display of all consoles Console rotation will only become available if Console Rotation Support is compiled in your kernel. NOTE: This is purely console rotation. Any other applications that use the framebuffer will remain at their 'normal'orientation. Actually, the underlying fb driver is totally ignorant of console rotation. > What can be the consequences with X? According to http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=360596 you can add; Option "Rotate" "CCW" to the device section in xorg.conf. Also, this *might* help http://linux.derkeiler.com/Mailing-Lists/Ubuntu/2007-10/msg02746.html Google is your friend. http://www.google.com.au/search?q=linux+fb+rotation http://www.google.com.au/search?q=linux+screen+rotation James. |

Hello, For all my Debian's computers, I usualy configure my consoles with the vga=791 (VESA framebuffer console @ 1024x768x64k). It works very well. Now, I'm working on a digital kiosk project with Linux embeded, but my screens are all mounted verticaly (it's a kind of photomaton with only a portrait mode). For the support of our solution, it's very hard to type console commands having the neck broken during hours. :( Is there a 768x1024 (for a screen mounted verticaly!) framebuffer mode? And, more generaly, is there a way to set all modes in a vertical way? What can be the consequences with X? Thanks, -- Jean-Martial. |

fbdev is the primary in-kernel generic video system. It is an alternative to the driver layer in X; that can only be used by X, which is very heavyweight -- and then X can use fbdev instead if the user just wants something that works. fbdev also provides fbcon, which is an alternative to the simple text mode console. Yes, this means that we get a console with (potentially) arbitrary resolutions and fonts. That's actually really useful when you are debugging a problem on a system causing X to not come up. More importantly, on some platforms the more basic video consoles do not work -- this is more common in embedded or esoteric (relative to x86) platforms. I don't think there is a single silver bullet -- but X and its clients are not the only software on the system that want a video display. * Chris Jones <cg...@gm...> [2008-11-18 19:22]: > I'm finding it difficult to "place" the framebuffer project. > > What is/are its objective(s)? > > Is it meant to be an alternative to X? > > Is it just a generic low-level package that complements X in the event > no specific driver for a given video chip is not available? > > Most people appear to think in a vague kind of way that the framebuffer > is just a bunch of tricks that let you use a higher resolution on the > linux console. > > This seems to make little sense in the light of all the activity on the > fbdev development list where patches (both corrections & enhancements) > are published on a daily basis. > > I just cannot imagine a number of high-end programmers spending their > time providing enhancements for the linux console - especially when you > consider how very few applications can actually run in that environment > and usually with some feature loss as compared to running them in an > xterm, for instance. > > There seems to be something much more important at stake than the linux > console but after reading the few available docs and being subscribed to > both fbdev lists for a number of years, I still don't get it. > > :-( > > Apologies if this post makes little sense to some/most.. You just bit-bang pixels in a memory area (the framebuffer) and it appears on the display. |
