Heh, well, there's certainly very little understanding on my part. I
don't administer the VMS end. However, I am friendly with the VMS sys
admin, so it is more likely I'll be able to make changes at the VMS end
than at any of the switches. So this is good news, I guess.

OK. I managed to get the attention of the net admin here responsible
for the switches and he assures me there is no filtering in place.

Now that's interesting. You say "... which is what most people use".
But how do I (as an unprivileged user on the VMS host) determine if that
is in fact what is used on this node? Could it be relevant that the MAC
addr involved in all non-IP packets I was able to log from the VMS host
is 08:00:2B:86:56:E1? That doesn't look like a area.node format MAC
address. Does that mean this host just isn't in Phase IV compatible
addressing mode? If not, what is the impact of switching it (i.e. could
I get my VMS sys admin to change it without breaking anything else?)
