Cheers for that >You probably need to "echo 5.400 > /proc/sys/net/decnet/node_address" You weren't wrong - the first time I typed it I messed up Everything seems good from the command line - I just have to learn how to use them now I will probably pause now to write up my RH7.3 procedure - incase I forget later (and this box is a trial for moving people in the company of windows and onto linux - so hopefully I will need it later) A quick X question though.... >You can use X-Windows from OpenVMS to Linux if you build >your X-Server with DECnet support or download one. This >makes Linux into an excellent (and cheap!) X-terminal for >VMS as well as Unix. It is also possible to display Linux >X programs on a VMS workstation using DECnet. OK - so I install a new XF86 file to /usr/X11R6/bin (from your pre-compiled downloads) to update it to decnet capable. How do I start a remote X-session?? I havn't done it yet but I plan to and it is fairly fundimental to the workstation changeover Hey - I said I was a newbie/duffer Cheers once again Nick P.S. Is any kindly person planning to build a XFree86.gz for XFree86 4.2.0? (Or can I use the XFree86.gz for XFree86 4.1.0?) -----Original Message----- From: Patrick Caulfield [mailto:pa...@ty...] Sent: 25 July 2002 13:18 To: lin...@li... (and need a duffer to try it on) Part of the problem with a duffers guide is that is is very distribution dependant. So the installation on RedHat varies considerably from Debian (where DECnet is part of the distribution). You're right - a newbies HOWTO is very much needed, and I suppose a Red Hat one would probably be the most commonly useful. > I have spent 2 days working out how to compile a kernel - now I have worked > that out and have DECnet in the kernel (not as a module) > > Then I installed the latest RPM on my RedHat 7.3 (2.4.18-3) system, chose my > node name and entered my regular node aliases (then checked they had made it > as far as /etc/decnet.conf - they did) > > I *Think* the dnetd is running - I started it manually. It's all a question of time and also knowing what it i speople want to know :-) > So - the question is.... > > What blindingly obvious steps have I missed? You probably need to "echo 5.400 > /proc/sys/net/decnet/node_address" after that you should start to see the otehr DECnet nodes appearing in /proc/net/decnet_neigh.
