Hi, OpenVMS 5.5-2 hardly support generic scsi disks. For examples connecting a Seagate SCSI disk of 1GB to a uVAX running OpenvVMS 5.5-2 gave a "FATAL DRIVE ERROR". Many other brands would fail the same way. At that time, Digital Introduced patches for the DKDRIVER.EXE (SCSI disk driver) and some of this 3rd party disk could be used. From OpenVMS 6.2, Generic SCSI disk support got better, but there's still some issues connecting UWSCSI disks to a Fast SCSI controller. You didn't mention which brand/model and capacity are you purchasing. Are they from Digital?
