Thanks - first positive reaction:
Imedeatly after typing "echo ..." and hitting ENTER I got
a OPCOM-messages on my VMS-Systemconsole:

Massage from user DECNET on LA2161
DECnet event 4.18, adjacency down
From node 2.10 (LA2161), 11-FEB-2002 13:08:41.10
Circuit EWA-0, Adjacent node listener receive timeout

Few seconds later:
Massage from user DECNET on LA2161
DECnet event 4.15, adjacency up
From node 2.10 (LA2161), 11-FEB-2002 13:08:48.79
Circuit EWA-0, Adjacent node 2.50

I think I entered the next stage on the ladder:

After putting a name in node_name and eth0 in 
default_device I can connect with my LA2161 and
got - not a login prompt, but nearly.

sethost LA2161
sethost V1.0.3
Connecting to LA2161
Connected. Escape Secquence is ^[

... and no login prompt.

But I think there was a posting in the past describing
this problem. I will look for that!
