Hi everyone, I've just had a bug posted by Debian about a conflict with the name of libdap.so. Apparently there is another project out there that also uses this name. I chose libdap because it matches the name of the DAP protocol it implements but thinking about it now, perhaps it should have had dnet in front it of to avoid such namespace clashes. So, I propose to rename this library to libdnet_dap (which makes it consistent with libdnet_daemon I suppose!). I don't honestly see any problem here, the only users of libdap are the DECnet tools - as fas as I know, if you know differently please speak up - and I can fix those easily. The only potential problem might be with people who are using librms, which has an implicit link to libdap, but I suspect that's a very small number of developmentally-capable users. I could be called for caving in to a request here; I suppose I probably have the precedence of time on my side (libdap dates from 1998) but the relative obscurity of the project mitigates against it. The other thing that is against me is that I did not split libdap into its own package within Debian, as is usual, instead I left it as part of libdnet. So anyone searching for libdap maybe would not have found it. Does anyone have any opinons on this ? Chrissie |
