Hi All, 9 years ago I had to code changes to sco and srv4 abi to make Microfocus cobol work on openserver 5.0.7. by chance I found the sources yesterday and I thought it would be useful for somebody that needs to still run openserver apps (I hope not). The changes for a full working kernel are on this repo. https://github.com/cneira/linux-abi It's the old kernel I was working at that time it should be straight forward merge with last abi changes and kernel 2.6.32. If someone is interested I could have them ported to that version that ships with centos 6, and have them merged with the current abi source. The changes are small but nonetheless was a pain to debug MF cobol. Bests |

Hi all ! Have a new system set up on a quad-core Athlon, running Debian Lenny, IBCS 3.8, and SCO Foxpro 2.6. Everything works great EXCEPT - after running a RUN command, Foxpro exits the running program & returns to the shell !! Even " run 'ls -l' pops you out ! Kernel is 2.6.26-2-686 #1 SMP Hope someone can help quickly - customer is anxious ! Suspect something in one of the IBCS modules .... Only error messages relate to not reading /etc/default/lang - it doesn't exist ... Thanks ! -- ......bobp De-fenestrate now ! Linux is the answer ! |

The previous version didn't work on Dell Optiplex's. I've uploaded a new version that does work on Dell Optiplex's to: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/index.php?func=detail&aid=3205121&group_id=13130&atid=313130 This version compiles on 2.6.35, but I haven't tested it on there. It would be helpful if people who tried it on platforms other than Debian Squeeze amd64 (2.6.32) reported their experiences here. I've put up a new version of the linux-abi modules here: https://sourceforge.net/tracker/?func=detail&aid=3205121&group_id=13130&atid=313130 It works on 2.6.32, and perhaps more importantly is possibly the first version that works well on amd64. I developed it on/for Debian squeeze. Debian packages for it can be found here: http://www.stuart.id.au/russell/files/debian/squeeze/ibcs/ I use it to run a curses based SCO program that doesn't do networking. Step outside of that and it probably won't work so well. I don't received emails from this list, so if you want to contact me email me directly at: russell DASH sourceforge AAAT stuart DIT id DOT au |

Hi I am trying to install and run linux abi on opensuse 11.2 to run SCO OS5 binaries. I downloaded from http://linux-abi.svn.sourceforge.net/viewvc/linux-abi/branches.tar.gz?view=tar and followed the instructions on the readme. which was just a make and then ./abl_ldr If i type file act I get act: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), stripped If I type sh act (the app) I get "cannot execute binary file" I tried (from the mailing list) echo "OSR5" | dd of=act bs=1 seek=36 count=4 conv=notrunc but I still get the same. What am I doing wrong - can I check that I've installed properly ? Many Thanks Peter |

Use "file <executable>" to find out what you need. If file says "Microsoft a.out ...", you need at least binfmt_xout (xout was just used to avoid confusion with "Linux a.out"). If file also says ".... segmented ... 286 ..." you will have to configure BINFMT_XOUT_X286=Y with ibcs_3_4 and you also need x286emul in /usr/lib. x286emul is the userland emulator which runs the executable. It is "Linux a.out", so you will need binfmt_aout too. Note that with the 2.6.2x kernel versions x286emul will most probably crash with sigsegv on delivery of a signal because the vdso handling changed in kernel. I am currently working on a fix for this problem. In fact there is a rather simple fix but it needs an additional symbol exported by the kernel and I try to avoid this. Hello Keith, try turning on debugging of the linux-abi. i think it was some "echo 0xffffffff >/proc/something" that did the job and then you find the results in some of the system log, if your syslog demon has a "log all" setup. (if not, add it and give the syslogd a restart.) then you should see what is probed and what fails. i would suggest only loading those module that you need because aout might be supported by multiple personalities. i think MS-Xenix was on the list of supported systems, but i'm just unsure if the 286 mode variant in the binary was included. if i would have a system like yours to your hand (i dont have it) i would add some kernel prints that provide more detailed info on where the loading failed. (hmm, would be a good idea to have a linux-abi loader simulator, that just helps probing a load in an easily debugged application program rather than in kernel.) regards, Alex. ----- Original Message -----=20 From: Keith Williams=20 To: lin...@li...=20 Sent: Tuesday, January 08, 2008 1:38 PM Subject: [Linux-abi-users] Foxbase+ ver1.0 Hi, Is there anybody that can successfully run Foxbase+ ver.1.0 on = linux-abi? Hello Miguel, I have not seen this issue with Progress V7 running on OpenSUSE 10.2 or other versions of OpenSUSE or other distributions. Which version of Progress are you talking about? Does it occur with a specific Progress application? -Robert alex wrote: > Hi Miguel, > > I have not dealt with similar situation in the past. > In order to start looking for problems in iBCS-3.3 you need to have your application working without stalling on some version of > Linux and abi/ibcs. > If you already have such configuration please advise what are the exact Kernel and abi versions. > The relevant portion of ibcs/abi trace file demonstrating stalling will be helpful too. > > Regards, > Alex. > P.S. > Robert W March has Progress 7 running on Suse 10.2 - he may be able to help with your particular issue. > > >> Comment By: Nobody/Anonymous (nobody) >> Date: 2007-06-08 13:06 >> >> Message: >> Logged In: NO >> >> Hi, Alex. >> >> I'm running progress databasse under openSUSE 10.2 and different kernel >> variants (stock 2.6.18, vanilla 2.6.20 & 2.6.21) + ibcs3.3 >> >> Initially it seems to work really fine but every few minuts my progress >> applications stalls for some seconds and then continue (I've noticed this >> stalls occurs when pdflush is working / The rest of applications aren't >> affected). >> >> Any idea about if this is a related ibcs problem? >> >> Thanks for your nice work. >> Regards. >> miquel >> >> |

Hi Alex. > You seem to be running the old "REGPARMS patch" for 2.6.16 - it was super= seded by iBCS-3.x. Yes, I used the old patch. But, I found the problem finally. Based in other comment from other linux-abi user. He asked to me =BFWhy did you compile static under 2.6.x if you had the patch working fine under 2.4.20? it was for other reasons, but yes, it was the answer. I don't know why, but I compiled the kernel 2.6.x (I proved with 2.6.16 and 2.6.18 in both working fine) with the Linux-Abi patch as modules (likes 2.4.20) and working my app works fine (finally): I had (in whatever 2.6.x): # # Executable file formats # CONFIG_BINFMT_ELF=3Dy CONFIG_BINFMT_AOUT=3Dy CONFIG_BINFMT_MISC=3Dy CONFIG_ABI=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_SVR4=3Dy # # SVR3/SVR4 based syscall support for x86: (please check one or more) # CONFIG_ABI_IBCS=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_ISC=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_SCO=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_SOLARIS=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_UW7=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_WYSE=3Dy # # SVR3/SVR4 related binary format support for x86: # CONFIG_BINFMT_COFF=3Dy CONFIG_BINFMT_XOUT=3Dy CONFIG_BINFMT_XOUT_X286=3Dy # CONFIG_ABI_LATE_PROBING is not set CONFIG_ABI_TRACE=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_UTIL=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_SPX=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_XTI=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_TLI_OPTMGMT=3Dy # CONFIG_ABI_XTI_OPTMGMT is not set CONFIG_ABI_SYSCALL_STATICS=3Dy # CONFIG_ABI_SYSCALL_MODULES is not set CONFIG_ABI_LCALL7=3Dy But I modified, then: # # Executable file formats # CONFIG_BINFMT_ELF=3Dy CONFIG_BINFMT_AOUT=3Dy CONFIG_BINFMT_MISC=3Dy CONFIG_ABI=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_SVR4=3Dm # # SVR3/SVR4 based syscall support for x86: (please check one or more) # CONFIG_ABI_IBCS=3Dm CONFIG_ABI_ISC=3Dm CONFIG_ABI_SCO=3Dm CONFIG_ABI_SOLARIS=3Dm CONFIG_ABI_UW7=3Dm CONFIG_ABI_WYSE=3Dm # # SVR3/SVR4 related binary format support for x86: # CONFIG_BINFMT_COFF=3Dm CONFIG_BINFMT_XOUT=3Dm CONFIG_BINFMT_XOUT_X286=3Dy # CONFIG_ABI_LATE_PROBING is not set CONFIG_ABI_TRACE=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_UTIL=3Dm CONFIG_ABI_SPX=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_XTI=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_TLI_OPTMGMT=3Dy # CONFIG_ABI_XTI_OPTMGMT is not set # CONFIG_ABI_SYSCALL_STATICS is not set CONFIG_ABI_SYSCALL_MODULES=3Dy CONFIG_ABI_LCALL7=3Dm And my app is working now. Why? is as module better for this patch? For my app thus it was. For last, Alex, I had problems with you IBCS 3.3 app, not for "many". Just were 3 or 4 apps, but I know the future for the linux-abi is your IBCS3. If you want, I can send you the output from these apps (the The 2.6.18 is the last kernel where the original patch works, then for future update, the IBCS3 must work :P Regards I hope this project follows with live. Many users (like me and my company) depends on this support. --=20 Anibal Avelar (FixXxeR) http://fixxxer.cc GPG: 83B64656 - C143 4AD8 B017 53FA B742 D6AA CEEA F9F3 83B6 4656 |

Hi everybody I have a big problem with the Linux-ABI module. I use the Linux-ABI since it was implemented to 2.4.x kernel series. On 2.4.20 kernel all my apps works fine, but with the path for 2.6.x (whatever, including the IBCS3.x) one app doesn't work. My file is: file /usr/bin/ph/rpcost/pfsfmscst /usr/bin/ph/rpcost/pfsfmscst: 80386 COFF executable I compiled the linux-ABI patch as part of kernel (not as module). The behavior is very strange. I think the problem is the executable COFF and how it was done (was done for SCO 3.2v4.2). It use many UNION's and I detected it use Union's with anonymous structs. I found this: [Bug c/13286] Union with anonymous struct as member in gcc3.3 http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-bugs/2003-12/msg00417.html [GCC C bug: sizeof a union of structs returns zero value] http://gcc.gnu.org/ml/gcc-bugs/2004-12/msg02495.html The -pfs-extensions(microsoft extension) is the key. In the compile 2.95 that opcion comes by default. After was removed. I don't know if it opcion is the reeason, or mey be is other thing. But my app does not work and I'm desperate. I tried all. I compiled the kernel with 3.2, 4.1 and 2.95 (inclusive) but nothing happens. Al is the same. The app does not work. The logs with (trace active), looks exactly the same. But the result is deferent (in the same machine). Thanks. I hope somebody can ell me something (any idea). No. If the app uses termcap/terminfo in a portable manner, this should not be a problem. But: a common mistake is to lie about the terminal in use. For instance if an app does run on ANSI terminals only it's useless to "export TERM=ANSI" while using an xterm. > 2-System load is always at 100%. Depends on the app. I know people who used to run production systems with linux abi. Linux abi is not complete, maybe something is missing for your app. If you like to contribute, find out what is missing or going wrong. A good point to start is to trace your app. Joerg -- ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Joerg Ahrens _/ Koenigsberger Strasse 32 _/_/ 31226 Peine _/ _/ Tel.: 05171/57308 _/ _/_/_/_/ e-mail: jo...@hy... _/_/_/_/ _/ ------------------------------------------------------------------------------ |

Hello list! First of all thanks for the linux-abi. I`m trying to migrate an application running on a SCO Openserver 5.06 writen in Mumps, some kind of computer language and database at the same time. This software is some kind of old era ERP. I`ve tried under various systems and kernels, including FreeBSD, OpenBSD (using the ibcs compatibility modules), Linux 2.4+abi and Linux 2.6+abi. I`ve managed to run the installer and the binaries in certain versions of Linux 2.4 and their respective patches. The other kernels/systems, including 2.6, just segfaults. Althought the systems seems to run, there are many problems: 1- The keyboard input is mad. I even loaded the SCO.map located on the PROD.Patches but no success. When the systems loads his curses-like interface, the text fields in the forms don`t accept any input but then they are filled with other characters like "C" and ">". Is this a common problem? 2-System load is always at 100%. From what I know, this system is running fine on a 500 mhz Celeron SCO Openserver and I`m testing this on a Celeron 1.7 ghz. Is this tremendous overhead expected? I thought the performance impact would be something like 2 or 4%. 3-The system seems kinda unstable. Even if I could fix the problems, is linux-abi ready for a production environment? I would appreciate any answers and insights. I worked hard to get beaten by a user interface. It would be like swin through the ocean and die on the beach. Thanks! |

Hi, > # file reldbsrv > reldbsrv: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), > dynamically > linked (uses shared libs), not stripped > > So, I don't know if this binary is compatible with linux-abi or there is > something not working with dynamic libraries or.... what's wrong???!!!!! There is nothing wrong with dynamic libraries in linux-abi. The problem is probably the loader. The loader for elf binaries is fs/binfmt_out.c It examines the elf structures to find out the interpreter in charge of this binary. Try "eu-readelf -a /usr/bin/ls| grep interpreter" and post the result please (I remeber that eu-readelf once was called simply readelf). For linux native (glibc) binaries this will be [Requesting program interpreter: /lib/ld-linux.so.2] For your binary this should be something else. Typically /usr/lib/libc.so.1 or /usr/lib/ld.so.1 Only if the interpreter is one of the 2 above, binfmt_elf.c will set the personality of the program to "ibcs2_interpreter" which is the point where linux-abi is involved. If the interpreter for your binary is either /usr/lib/libc.so.1 or /usr/lib/ld.so.1 then please check if this file exists and if the execute bit in file premissions is set. If the interpreter of your binary is something else, then you will have to modify fs/binfmt_elf.c to pass the loader with the correct personality. Even if your interpreter is /lib/ld-linux.so.2 which I do not expect, there is a chance to succeed by modifying fs/binfmt_elf.c > Someone on the list (thank's John) suggested me to use elfmark to "force" or > specify the ELF binary for SCO on that program. Hi everybody: Once again, i have some doubts about those compatible binaries that can run with abi-linux. I'm runing SCO Openserver RM Cobol running on 2.4.21-37 CentOS 3 kernel. It works pretty well but I'm trying to use Relativity sofware to run, but it doesn't. When I try to execute i got: # reldbsrv -bash: ./reldbsrv: Permission denied or # bash reldbsrv reldbsrv: reldbsrv: cannot execute binary file the file command show me this: # file reldbsrv reldbsrv: ELF 32-bit LSB executable, Intel 80386, version 1 (SYSV), dynamically linked (uses shared libs), not stripped So, I don't know if this binary is compatible with linux-abi or there is something not working with dynamic libraries or.... what's wrong???!!!!! Someone on the list (thank's John) suggested me to use elfmark to "force" or specify the ELF binary for SCO on that program. I've done, but it still doesn't work. Again, thanks on advance. Oscar |
