Hi Matt, As an Ericsson employe I'm proud to say that our latest smart phone R380 (http://www.ericsson.com/infocenter/news/990325_R_380s_CeBit.html) is an arm 710T (customised ASIC) running EPOC32. Actually it's a dual CPU solution in which the GSM signaling stuff is done one CPU (got no details on that) and all PDA Apps are running on the ARM. This phone should hit the shops in a few weeks/months time. I have no illusions about Ericsson's co-operation in getting Linux running on this device: none whatsoever. Given the closed architecture of this product I think it's virtually impossible to get Linux on a device like this and wouldn't recommend even trying. I personally have a great interest in getting Linux up and running on other ARM/EPOC32 devices (S5mx, S7 etc). It seems that the S5mx is a dead end but there may be some hope for the S7. Said that, as an Ericsson employe having full access to EPOC32 confidential information, I find myself walking a _very_ thin line. In all my recent efforts (porting Arlo to the S5mx and the first (small) step to booting Linux on the S5mx) and any future efforts I need to make sure (I think!) I can demonstrate to not have crossed that line. Is there someone else in a similar position? Any hints, tips or advice? cheers, Peter Matt Gumbley wrote: > > It's encouraging to see Don from Cirrus' mail - very nice to see a > hardware manufacturer being co-operative with Open Source projects like > this. > > Since it looks like there's possibly some hard work ahead of any porting > effort to the 5mx/7/Revo/etc., could some kind soul summarise the other > options: what other PDA devices are out there, that have a form factor > similar to the Series 5, are ARM-powered, and can get Linux ported > *easily* - i.e. the manufacturer is co-operative? > > Thanks, > Matt > -- > Matt J.
