Connecting to the desktop over the serial line is described in the HOWTO for the 5MX: http://linux-7110.sourceforge.net/howtos/series5mx/5MXHOWTO/5MX_howto_9.htm Also the netBook, which will be no different, except for the name of the serial port: http://linux-7110.sourceforge.net/howtos/netbook_new/x566.htm And yes, you have to make and use the ttyAM1 device. And the Psion cable is already a null modem device, so you don't need a null modem adapter. Before messing with PPP, your best bet is to use minicom on the psion and desktop to ensure that the connection is working - these dumb terminal emulators will just dump what you type to the other machine, so they ensure the baud rate, etc are set right. If you are going from Psion to a Windoze machine... I am at a loss, although I think there is a hyperterminal thing in Windoze that is meant to work. Such terminal emulators have the capability of sending files back and forth (Send File, Receive File, etc.) There is also good ole Kermit - start kermit up on either end and you can send files back and forth, etc. But the PPP connection is the most slick, since it gives you networking. Part of the problem with serial connections is that they are as old as Moses, so there are a bizzilion ways to set up a serial connection. I think Moses set up a serial connection across the Red Sea before he was finally able to part it (and it was good). B.D.
