I have managed to compile the xc-011010 src code, with the X server so that it works with Xfont.so, with freetype. This means that now the X-Server works with TTF , TrueType fonts, and the like. Having compiled gnome b4, I can happily say that now Gnumeric works on it. Getting a newer version of gnumeric today, (one where you can hide the toolbars for extra space!). Will have a screenshot out soon. If any one wants what I've got (the source code compiled, CF disk image - tar'ed), email me, and I will send you a CD for £1, or something, cos I can't get access to enough bandwidth to upload anything yet. Hi, I would like to use LAN card with 5mx, so I run cardmgr in psilinux, Unfortunately, cardmgr (or cardctl) seems to be not worked with even CF. What happened? What should I do? So I've just created utils.zip which is everything in that dir in= a zip file. Hi guys, I've finally got round to uploading my work so far for you all to play with (Got a faster connection today :-). It's now available at: http://linux-7110.sourceforge.net/cgi-bin/index.cgi?url=files/Distributions/5mx/IPKGdistro/v0.4/AAA_IPKG_NOTES.htm And that URL gives most of the details although I haven't managed to write any decent install instructions. Essentially it's 'download the ...IPKGdistro/v0.4/feed, /epoc and /utils dirs plug a 64MB CF into your CF adaptor. Edit utils/formatcard to point to the correct drive to find the CF card and run it. That should then do everything for you. If you use any of the build scripts you'll need to change the paths and install ipkg on your host. Things I know don't work and need some work are: pygps (needs python libglade stuff) mixer segfaults madplay makes a horrible croaking noise then complains about formats ipatience needs libfreetype feedback and improvements very welcome I'm away for a month from 28th July to 26th Aug, so I'll be very quiet for a bit. Can I appeal to you to consider doing this in docbook SGML based on the conversion I did of mostly-Brian's howto recently? We've got a lot of variants of hardware and software at the moment and rather than having n diffeent HOWTOs for all the combinations I'd like to try and have one that covers the various options. Doing it in SGML means we can automatethe production of the different HOWTO flavours but something common to everything only has to be updated once, not 4 times. I'm currently rewriting this HOWTO to cover the ipkg-based distros as well as the dpkg one. I need to have finished by the end of the week as I'm off on hols for a month. The current version of the SGML HOWTO is here: http://linux-7110.sourceforge.net/howtos/series5mx_new/ But as I say I'm just starting a wholesale re-arrangment of it. (I've got it scrawled on paper - just need tying in...). Have a look but wait till friday before doing any major work on it. Hi Jeff, good to see you booted the machine with Peter's stuff. I started to doubt myself with people not managing to get it going. For the moment this is as far as it goes. A lot ARM compiled packages may work without to much hassle. Just add them to the ramdisk (but keep it acceptable size). I've succesfully added the watchdog program for instance. Using Tex may work but since you don't have a way to save stuff except via the serial connection, it may not be very useful. I know Peter is working on the PCMCIA/CF stuff, but don't know how much time he has, so I don't have a clue when it may start to work. I'm thinking of taking a look at X but the learning curve may be to steep for me. In the meanwhile over the past days I've done some HOWTO typing. Needs to be done as well. Also I found out that finally there's a driver for the Socket CF WLAN card I've got so I can't wait to see that work with my iPAQ. I have managed to boot Linux on the S7, using files and information from Peter's site. Is there anything more I can expect to do, or is this (currently) the end of the show? (It is certainly the end of my know-how.) To be specific, is it possible to install and use TeX on the S7 (using xdvi for the 640x480 screen)? TIA/jtw |

The best I was able to dig up was: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~bg3k-ysd/psion/src.html It is a patch to a quite old gpm. And here: http://www.asahi-net.or.jp/~bg3k-ysd/psion/ |

Wookey I'll do it to the end of august. send me the file please. Klaus I'm happy to send it to Linux developers wanting to work on the series 7. Anyone wnat to run it all through an OCR system and see if we can get a smaller doc out of it? (could be very difficult to do well as there are a lot of tables). Wookey |

I suppose they're > targeting customers that are loyal enough (ie - stupid enough) to pay that > amount of money for a 5mx... Allow me to clarify...I agree that for what the 5MX is, $370 is quite high and that with smart, lucky buying on e-bay one can get a deal. My comment was more along the lines of the market price for the 5MX - presently on e-bay there are three MX's nearing completion of their bids - two in U.S., one in U.K. Their present prices are US$202, US$221 and US$243, all with 1-2 days left in the bidding, which is consistent with what I've seen before. So $250-300 is roughly the market price for these (seems to me). Considering the (moderate/minor) risks of buying on e-bay for stuff that may well be in a used condition, $370 for a brand new Psion 5MX directly from Psion Corp is (economically...) not that bad. Then consider that the alternatives for something with a keyboard (e.g., NEC Mobilepro) are running in the $900 range (and as far as I can tell don't run linux)...well, so it goes, the endless dance of computer hardware pricing... |

Hi all, I've done some testing again to find out why there may be so many problems running the current kernel on the Series7/netBook. I've started with a empty formatted CF card and loaded Peter van Sebille's last arlo/boot2nd/kernel combined with "my" ramdisk. Steps: - Cold boot the machine to allow for a new arlo lib - Unzip arlo.zip on the "root" of the CF - Copy the kernel into the arlo directory - Boot the machine in EPOC - Create D:\System\data\wsini.ini with line STARTUP D:\arlo\arlosh.exe - Run arlo from the Extra's bar - Arlo registers itself and comes up with the menu - Update the arlo.cfg to address the kernel - Boot the kernel - Reboot to get back to ARLO. Everything works out of the box. Machine: - netBook 64Mb RAM (arlo sees it, but the kernel still only reports 16M ==> Peter's kernel is for the series7 and has only 16Mb mapped) - keyboard: UK layout plus Euro sign I still don't think, despite some remarks into that direction, that a different keyboard would stop the machine from booting. You may not have a working keyboard (or badly mapped). Anyone in doubt, may try an old kernel from Peter that didn't have any keyboard support ;-) I started with this one about a year ago. After having tested this, I've finally started writing a HOWTO for the Series7/netBook based on the 5-HOWTO already on the site, so expect something soon. I'm sorry that I can't be of more help at the moment for those struggling with their Series7/netBooks. I'll gather all machine info that I can find on mine and will make it part of the HOWTO. Hopefully we'll get the clue soon. Cheers, Paul ===== There is nothing wrong with Windows 2000... ...that Linux can't fix. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? Yahoo!
