Dear LinkBase user, I am proud to announce release candidate 2 of LinkBase 3.0. There are not many visible changes since RC1. I fixed various bugs and improved the usability (linkbase tries to remember the currently selected topic whenever possible, to provide a useful default selection.) If you are already using 3.0-RC1, you should update to RC2 (no database changes). If you still use Linkbase 2.0 or older, I strongly encourage you to try out whether 3.0-RC2 works for you and report problems to me. As soon as 3.0 stable is out, you really should upgrade, as 2.0 has some severe security problems. Please try it out and tell me whether you find any problems, bugs, improvements etc. so I can release a stable version of LinkBase in the next months. Hope to hear from you, david -- LinkBase - Your links on the Internet http://linkbase.sourceforge.net |

Finally the first release candidate for LinkBase 3.0 is finished. It is available in the download section and the demo site is now using the new version. Download it or try it out under http://linkbase.sourceforge.net And of course, tell me what you think of it, especially if you encounter problems (or want to praise me:-) The most important changes are: - You can upload files and create a file gallery with linkbase - You can edit topics - You can quickly submit a page to LinkBase using a special bookmark - You have (brasilian) portuguese and turkish translations thanks to Carlisson Galdino resp. Emre Saglam See CHANGELOG for a list of all the new features. One word of caution: Do not yet update your production installation of older versions. Rather test this version and tell me if it works. There might still be some bug in this release which could be a security risk or mix up your database. Help is needed! Do you speak Russian, Spanish or Norvegian? Then you could update the language files, because those translations are missing the newer strings. Do you know how to handle multilanguage and encoding problems in php? There seem to be problems with posting links and some characters. Contact me if you are interested. Enjoy! David Buchmann -- LinkBase - Your links on the Internet http://linkbase.sourceforge.net |

Hello all, It has been a long time since the last message on this list. Now there is a new version of LinkBase in the pipeline. In CVS you find the current developpment status of LinkBase. It finally reached a state to be runnable. I do not yet recommend updating your old version, as it has beta quality at most. But if you feel like installing it on a test machine and reporting me whether it worked, you are very welcome. Or just go playing with the test version i put onto this web site. The list of changes is long: * I basically rewrote large parts of the application. It should be easyer to maintain and extend now. * It (should) output valid XHTML now. * You can use LinkBase as a File gallery. * Improved navigation both for users and in administration. * Topics can be edited And more changes. See the CHANGELOG in CVS for some more... Have fun and tell me when you find any errors or have suggestions. Follow this link to test the new LinkBase: http://linkbase.sourceforge.net/demo_devel/ Kind Regards, David Buchmann -- LinkBase - Your links on the Internet http://linkbase.sourceforge.net |

Hi, I've been looking for a faq system which provides the capabilities of LinkBase. viz., multi-category, moderated, searchable faq system. This is typically suitable for a group of 20-30 people, as is my present case. Till now i've not come across anything that is simple and at the same time comprehensive, not to mention easy configuration. It struck me that perhaps LinkBase itself could be suitably modified to achieve this end. Would there be any such plans ahead. Essentially the action of submitting a Link, would become the action of submitting a question or an answer to a question. Pictorially: Computers | - Operating Systems | - Q1 - What is an OS | - A1 - First Answer | - A2 - Second Answer | - Q1 - What is a good reference for UNIX | - A1 - First Answer | - A2 - Second Answer | - Computer Architecture | - Q1 - Some question. | - A1 - First Answer | - A2 - Second Answer | - Q1 - Some question. | - A1 - First Answer | - A2 - Second Answer Do you think this (FaqBase) is possible ? It'd be very nice if it can be done. - mahesh |

Hello ! Things have been quite quiet last months, but LinkBase is not dead. The project was just sleeping ;) The 1.4 version is in developpement. Here's a list of expected features : - the ability for a link to belong to more than one link topic (Sven Erik Andersen's idea) - full support for PostgreSQL (Yeah! Even the SQL dumps to create the base will be available this time ! ;-) - Import/Export bookmarks from/to Netscape (J. Leclercq should be working on it but it has been long since I didn't heard anything from him -- anyone willing to help ?), and mozilla - an option to recover a deleted link (for example, you're a moderator and you've denied a link to enter the base, what is going to be done, is the ability to take this deleted and put it in the moderation queue again) - on the main page, some 2nd level topics should be displayed (like on Yahoo! or on any other descent annuary) - add a $table_prefix setting (may please thoses who install LinkBase on a website where they only have one database). For example, if you set the $table_prefix setting to 'lb', you'll have to rename the topics table to lb_topics, the moderators table to lb_moderators, and so on. But the topics and moderators table will be available for your website datas. - create a 'Personal patch' for LinkBase 1.4 (or later). When this patch is applied, moderation functions are disabled, everybody is running LinkBase with moderator rights. - mail the LinkBase owner in case of problem - more persistent moderator connexion than just a session (I don't know about you, but I'm tired to log on as a moderator every time I close my browser ;-) For those who are interested, a CVS repository is available since December. Just send me a patch or something if you want write access. Anyone can access the CVS in read-only. Just type this : export CVSROOT=:pserver:ano...@cv...:/cvsroot/aboutlinux cvs login cvs checkout LinkBase As a consequence, a 'LinkBase' directory will be created in the current directory. To keep up to date with the latest bugs^wsources, cd to the 'LinkBase' directory, type the first two commands and then : cvs update instead of cvs checkout. Perhaps you're wondering why the CVS is not hosted on SourceForge. In fact, since VA Linux (the company that is paying for SourceForge) is currently introducing closed-source piece of software in the SourceForge infrastructure, making it harder and harder for developpers to export their projects to other web-hosting plateforms, and taking its distance with the free software community, we'll move to another place. Our new location will be on Tuxfamily.org [www.tuxfamily.org], a web hosting plateform that offers every services we need (virtual web hosting, mailing lists, CVS, ...) for free. The project website will move after LinkBase 1.4 is out. Thanks for your interest in Linkbase ! -- Jean HAUSSER, aka 'Guffle' web : http://linkbase.sourceforge.net |

Hi there, Silly me, there were a few bugs in LinkBase 1.3 : - in the page that showed the topic tree in the tree view, topics didn't indent and oudent as expected, so the tree.php3 script has been updated - the update-1.3.sql *REMOVED* the title field from the topics table, there was just an error in the SQL statements, I wrote : ALTER topics DROP title instead of ALTER topics DROP INDEX title - the linkbase.sql has been updated. The UNIQUE key on the 'title' field in the 'topics' table prevented topics with the same name to be created at different locations in the topic tree because of limitations before LinkBase 1.2 where sub-topics weren't supported. For example, it is now possible to have the following topics at the same time : News Portals :: French :: Linux Operating Systems :: Linux These bugs have been corrected and I made a new tar.gz archive of LinkBase-1.3. This archive has been uploaded on linkbase.sourceforge.net at about 19h00 (GMT+1) so if you downloaded it before this date, you're invited to download it again. Sorry for the delay, but I was unable to log on the SourceForge account before this date (because of the recent tragic events in the USA ?). As usual, if you see a bug or a missing feature you'd like to be implemented in LinkBase, you can either hack the code directly :) or send me a mail. Hi there, I've just uploaded LinkBase 1.3 on the project site. This is a major release, here is a list of the changes that occured since version 1.2 : Database support improvements : - the database abstraction layer should work but has yet only been tested with MySQL - PostgreSQL may now be supported but has yet not been tested. Moreover, the SQL dumps for PostgreSQL are still missing, any help would be appreciated for this part of the work. Feature enhancements : - a mail can be sent to every moderators each time a link is submitted - tree view (really) of the topic tree - it is now possible to choose the number of columns in which the topics are split when browsed. Moreover, topics are now listed in alphabetical order, down each column, and additional informations (such as the number of links in the topic and the number of sub-topics) can be displayed (thanks to Sven-Erik Andersen for the idea). - small interfaces improvements Bugfixes : - the database format has changed a bit, LinkBase can now handle up to 32767 topics (instead of 127). To upgrade, run the db_dump/update-1.3.sql script on your database. The upgrade is transparent and won't require you to check your links afterwards. Thanks to Sven-Erik Andersen for having noticed and corrected the bug. - code cleaning and commenting It is available from the usual location : http://linkbase.sourceforge.net/?action=download Note to users of previous versions : Don't be afraid of upgrading : this morning, I installed the first public release of LinkBase (1.00RC4) and upgraded it to 1.00, then 1.1r2, 1.2 and 1.3 with no problem ! Since each version has less bugs and adds new useful features, I would be in your interest to upgrade. Just take care of reading the UPGRADE file in the root dir of LinkBase for instructions. Enjoy ! -- Jean HAUSSER, aka 'Guffle' web : http://www.aboutlinux.eu.org http://linkbase.sourceforge.net |

Hello there, LinkBase 1.2 is available for download, this is a major release. Here is the changelog for this version : - A mail can optionnaly be sent each time a link is submitted to notice the moderator about it. - We now have a 'Powered by...' image (Sven-Erik Andersen) - Updated the norwegian version (Sven-Erik Andersen) - Updated the german version (HJ Beckers) - Added links to check every box at once in the moderation panel (Sven-Erik Andersen) - Added support for sub-topics. That allows LinkBase to work like a link directory (like Yahoo! or dmoz.org) - Some minor bugfixes You get it from the usual location : http://linkbase.sourceforge.net/?action=download It is possible to upgrade from any version of LinkBase. Please read the UPGRADE file at the root of the LinkBase/ directory to see how to do it. As usual, feedback from users would be appreciated. Note: the spanish language file is not updated. It will be published in a further release. -- Jean HAUSSER, aka 'Guffle' web : http://www.aboutlinux.eu.org http://linkbase.sourceforge.net |

Hi there, LinkBase 1.1r2 is available for download. You can get it from : http://linkbase.sourceforge.net/?action=download This is a minor release that corrects some bugs and adds some minor features. Here is the changelog for version 1.1r2 : - Wrote a patch that disables LinkBase's moderation features (see in the nomod/ directory) - small interface enhancement - minor bugfixes If you're using version 1.1 and if you want your submissions to be moderated, you should rather wait for version 1.2 that is about to be released (not all translators have yet sent me the updated files for their languages). But anyone who uses LinkBase for personal or local use, or in a secure environnement in which users are well-known and trusted may be interested in this version. Applying the 'nomod' patch allows you to disable all the moderation features of LinkBase. That means that : - any contribution will automatically go in the public database without requering any approval - anyone can create and drop topics - anyone can drop any link that has been entered in the database As usual, feedback would be appreciated. -- Jean HAUSSER, aka 'Guffle' web : http://www.aboutlinux.eu.org http://linkbase.sourceforge.net |

Hi there, LinkBase version pre1.2 is available for download. Here is a list of what has changed since version 1.1 : - A mail can optionnaly be sent each time a link is submitted to notice the moderator about it. - A patch that disables all LinkBase's moderation features (for version 1.1) - Updated the norwegian version (thanks to Sven-Erik Andersen) - Added links to check every box at once in the moderation panel - Added support for sub-topics. This feature makes it possible to sort links using a topic tree, and use LinkBase like a link directory. WARNING : because of sub-topic support, the database format has changed since version 1.1. Please read the UPGRADE file if you are upgrading from an older version of LinkBase. - Some minor bugfixes This is a pre-release. You shouldn't use this version in a production environnement since there may still be some bugs. *** Notes to translators *** - all translators are invited to subscribe to the 'linkbase-devel' list. - please download the pre1.2 version from : http://linkbase.sourceforge.net/download/LinkBase-pre1.2.tar.gz - because of the the new features there are listed above, additional sentences have been added to the languages files. You are invited to translate the 8 sentences at end of the following files : no.inc.php3 de.inc.php3 es.inc.php3 The french and the english versions have already been updated. - The modhelp.html files in inc/xx/modhelp.html (where xx is the iso-code of the language) are no longer up to date. I made a little change around the lines 15 to 18 of the inc/en/modhelp.html file. The french version has already been updated. Please update the version you are responsable for. Once you've have finished the work (this is a 10 minute's work), you can proceed as usual by sending the updated version as an attachement to gu...@us... *** Note to end-users/developpers *** There may still be some bugs in this pre1.2 version. I would really appreciate any feedback from testers, this includes : - (clear :-) bug reports - advices, ideas of features to add, ... - patches (what ?! who says I'm a dreamer !? :-) Please feel free to contact me at gu...@us... if you have any question. I know, I said "no more than one post a week", put since the work has been done, I announce it here. I've just finished writing a patch for the version 1.1. Applying this patch allows you to disable LinkBase's moderation features. That means that : - any contribution will automatically go in the public database without requering any approval - anyone can create and drop topics - anyone can drop any link that has been entered in the database You can get it from http://linkbase.sf.net/?action=download Anyone who uses LinkBase for personal and local use, or in a secure environnement in which users are well-known could be interested in this patch. First of all, sorry for the delay. I had important exams to pass which didn't let me much time for LinkBase. Anyway, LinkBase 1.1 is out. Here is the changelog for this version : - LinkBase now supports spanish (thanks to Jonatan G. Arango) - Added some default links to fill in the empty original base - Fixed a bug about the edito.html, LinkBase didn't behave as expected. Now, if a file named edito.html is found in the root directory, its content will be displayed in the Edito Box on the front page. If not, the edito.html file located in the inc/xx/ (where 'xx' is the ISO-country of the language that you choosed in the config file) will be displayed. This is not a major release, but spanish-speaking people may be interested in using this version. Since I'm know on holiday, I'll have plenty of time to spend on this project. Moreover, two men offered their help and are also working on LinkBase. So major improvements such as the ability to create sub-topics or import bookmarks from Netscape might come soon (see the TODO-list for additional informations).
