Btw, device name is not present in gnome-alsamixer, just an empty tab. I attach a screenshot. cheers Maciek |

The TonePort transmits the same signal on the left and right channels, but with largely different amplification. So if you hear a noisy signal in the right channel, try to move the balance entirely to the left side, where you might have the clear signal, which simply could not have been heard while the right channel was active. You can also use the monitor control in a mixer application to adjust the volume of the guitar signal. > Issue 3: I noticed in the documentation it was stated that the UX2 was > not equipped with the Capture Source feature due to lack of response. > I am wondering if there is any further update as I would like to be > able to switch between all my available input sources. I just added support for source select on the UX2 under the assumption that it's identical as on the UX1 in the following subversion branch: https://line6linux.svn.sourceforge.net/svnroot/line6linux/driver/branches/ux2 Please also have a look at http://sourceforge.net/projects/line6linux/forums/forum/713265/topic/3695415 which is the discussion with an UX1 user finally leading to some of UX1's features being supported. Can you please provide the list of source select options of the UX2 (as requested in posting #12 in the above mentioned forum thread)? Hey everyone, I'm having a few problems with installing the Linux driver for my Line6 TonePort UX2. Issue 1: Every other time I start up my computer, one of the Clip lights come on in the front. Not both, just one of them. It's very strange. Issue 2: The instrument (normal) input is always active in my right speaker. When I play my guitar and it's connected to the instrument input, it plays through this speaker no matter what, except it is very distorted and noisy. Is there any way I can stop this? Issue 3: I noticed in the documentation it was stated that the UX2 was not equipped with the Capture Source feature due to lack of response. I am wondering if there is any further update as I would like to be able to switch between all my available input sources. Thank you for the help. Please let me know about any debugging steps you would like me to take. This driver is just one of the few issues standing between me and being Windows-free, so any help you guys can give me is very much welcome. -Chris |

Hello, First, thank for your hard work: I've successfully do many things with my pod xt live with Linux!!! I've downloaded and checked the code. Two issues araise: 1. Can't we put this module in alsa? this way, this driver will appear on may distros without much effort from the user part. Maybe some code changes must be done to be aproved, but it will a plus. I'm offering to help or do this work, if you wish. Are any licensing issues pending? 2. I've seen the kernel module code, and found that many of the sysfs hacks and handling of the device is done in kernel space, but the code is mostly sending/receiving MIDI messages. I think is this plain wrong, all this code must be in user space, not kernel space. So, I think we should strip this code from the kernel module and put it in some library. This will make disapear many of the sysfs files, but anyway this must be put in the library not kernel. All current client libraries for line6usb should send/receive standard midi messages through alsa instead of reading/writing the sysfs. Besides, this will make this client libraries more compatible with other line6 products: think for example the flextone amps, which have a similiar midi protocol but have no usb connection; the same library could be used if we connect the flextone through a midi port. Besides, any error in this midi could take serious consecuences, for example I've already hang my machine by sending "random" midi messages to my line6 through alsa. I suspect there are bugs in that code. For making all of this work, we should take off all midi handling in kernel and provide the raw midi device. And make sure it receives what is expected: I found that line6 midi specs says that a channel dump is a sysex message, but actually is sent with a FB first byte. The kernel driver must make sure that what is received/sent in user space is the same as the line6 midi specs. This make compatible the user library if you connect a line6 device through usb or through a midi port. I could help in both issues, I'm actually writing a python studio (DAW) program and already created a python binding for alsa (It's available in current 1.06rc2 alsa version). I plan to make a python library for line6 products, which you could use with any line6 product with midi support. But I will like to hear your opinions first. Best Regards, -- Aldrin Martoq <am...@dc...> |

Hi, Thanks very much for the driver for the various line 6 USB devices, I'm looking forward to using it ! The attached trivial patch removes the use of snd_pcm_group_for_each line6usb which has been removed in kernel version 2.6.22. With this patch applied, the driver compiles fine with kernel 2.6.23. Before hacking away at the driver to support my new X3 Live, I plugged it in with USB and just watched /var/log/messages. Attached is a patch file for current SVN Trunk. It's a start at adding support for the X3 products to the driver. Seeing as I don't exactly know what I'm doing, it's not really working yet. /var/log/messages now spits this out: Oct 19 09:13:03 bht-lenovo kernel: usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 9 Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: usb 1-5: new high speed USB device using ehci_hcd and address 10 Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: usb 1-5: new device found, idVendor=0e41, idProduct=414b Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: usb 1-5: new device strings: Mfr=1, Product=2, SerialNumber=0 Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: usb 1-5: Product: POD X3 Live Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: usb 1-5: Manufacturer: Line 6 Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: usb 1-5: configuration #1 chosen from 1 choice Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: line6usb 1-5:1.0: Line6 PODx3 Live found Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: drivers/usb/core/message.c: selecting invalid altsetting 5 Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: line6usb 1-5:1.0: set_interface failed Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: line6usb: probe of 1-5:1.0 failed with error -22 Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: line6usb 1-5:1.1: Line6 PODx3 Live found Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: drivers/usb/core/message.c: selecting invalid altsetting 5 Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: line6usb 1-5:1.1: set_interface failed Oct 19 09:13:05 bht-lenovo kernel: line6usb: probe of 1-5:1.1 failed with error -22 Oct 19 09:31:16 bht-lenovo sudo: boyd : TTY=pts/3 ; PWD=/home/boyd/projects/line6usb-driver ; USER=root ; COMMAND=/usr/bin/make install Oct 19 09:31:48 bht-lenovo kernel: usbcore: deregistering interface driver line6usb So, I'm wondering what the next steps are. Could someone explain the general method of controlling a POD XT USB device? I'm trying to wrap my hands around how this all works. From what I can tell, with older POD devices, you had to plug in a MIDI cable to control the device (i.e., change amp models, effect settings, etc.). With the newer PODs it looks like the controlling can done via USB. My question is: 1. Do you control the POD using MIDI packets/commands still over the USB interface -- or -- 2. Do you use some other direct USB command to do the controlling? I was fiddling around with the MIDI API in OS X just to get an understanding of how this stuff works, but my POD X3 Live never seemed to respond to any of the MIDI packets I sent it. So now it's got me wondering whether I should be using some other USB-direct command. I tried reading through the line6linux driver code, but I'm sure I'm missing something because I haven't read through any driver documentation for Linux yet. It's on my todo list next. :) Thanks for any help you might offer, Boyd |

Monkey sees the X3 Live but GearBox doesn't understand it. I'm gonna sound completely stupid since I have no idea how this stuff works, but reading through some of the source code and product manuals on older products, it looks like communication with the POD is all done via MIDI. I sent a private message to Line6Miller on the user discussion groups asking for an update MIDI CC Reference Chart for the X3/X3 Live, but I'm not sure if they just hand that out. I assume that's what'd be needed to update the line6usb linux driver. I've contemplated building something using Cocoa in OS X that just does some simple slider controls to communicate with the X3's MIDI interface. But, since I've never done any MIDI programming in the past, I'm not sure how easy/hard it'd be. And, of course that'd be using the OS X Line 6 drivers. The other option for me would be to do the same thing using Gtk in linux; or just wait until January '08 for Line 6 to release a newer version of GearBox that works in OS X. Are there already existing MIDI apps (free/open source ones) that would let you tweak the X3's interface? Boyd |

Maybe this would push the project to the next step. But, since there is no software update for the X3/X3Live in the download area of Line6 for Line6Edit or such software, there are two possibilities for communicating with that devices: - Compatible with older PODS - Editing software is still pending So the question is: are the X3/X3Live are managebale with existing Win/Mac software? hardy |

I just bought an X3 Live and saw this project. I wondered if anyone's already working on updating these drivers to use the X3 Live. I would love to help out. I've written a few Gtk applications but have never gotten into writing drivers. Perhaps this would be a great place to start. Has anyone written a Gtk front-ends for controlling the PODS?
