This has already been proposed earlier, and after using the forums for a while, I agree that they are not really satisfactory for communication at the present volume. So let's collect votes for mailing lists. My proposal is to create two lists: "line6linux-devel" and "line6linux-user", both of them public.
Who is in favor of / against this, or has other proposals?
Kind regards,
Markus

My vote is for those lists, since I currently receive notifications for those forums via e-mail and cannot answer them directly (open a browser first, log in reply a.s.o.), also quoting would be easier.

I hate mailing lists and I don't see any reason to use them. A good bulletin board like phpBB is much more powerful, it is easy to administrate and it's free either. And the best thing is that you don't get tons of mails that you probably don't want to read.

Me too, until I evaluated mailing list support in two email clients (kmail and thunderbird), and found them to be quite useful. Both provide a threaded view, which IMO is the most important feature to easily follow discussions.

That's probably true, but we are talking about the sourceforge "default" forum software, which is not really powerful...
> it is easy to administrate
That's true if you have full control over the server, but I don't think this can be installed on the sourceforge site. Moreover, I'm not really willing to install extra software, but prefer to select the most efficient tool among those which are readily available.

Again the mail client can help here. You just need a filter to move all messages from a particular mailing list into a separate folder and configure automatic deletion of old messages.
Still I would prefer newsgroups, but it doesn't seem that we get them from sourceforge, so the choice is between this forum and mailing lists.
Kind regards,
Markus

As far as I know you get webspace including php and mysql from sourceforge. Hari Nair (author of xplanet, another project I'm involved) has had the same problem. He set up a bulletin board (http://xplanet.sourceforge.net/FUDforum2/) and he is quite happy with it. Markus, if you don't want to install extra software then I do it for you if you don't mind. Setting up a default phpBB is a time waste of approx. 10 minutes. But I will definitely not join a mailing list.

IMO, the choice of software should not restrict communication, so what about automatic exchange of messages between the tools preferred by each contributor? It has been proposed to mirror a mailing list at http://www.gmane.org. Are you fine with newsgroups (you don't receive any message without explicitly requesting it)? If not, does phpBB (or any other BB software) allow bidirectional message exchange with a mailing list?
Kind regards,
Markus

Ok, I should have looked before: http://www.mail2forum.com
Mario, would you set up this software if the majority votes for mailing lists?
Kind regards,
Markus

I just can see an error message. There's a serious issue at that website. I will have a look later that evening but I assume that you just wanted to show me the way to connect phpbb to mailing list.

Of course I would. As I made an offer before, why shouldn't I ;-). If I can't really help with the coding that's the smallest effort I can make. I need access to FTP and mySQL then, please.

I vote also for these lists. Better readable and better to track.
