After 21 years as commercial software, Lima VVA — a lightweight Windows application for road design and earthwork calculation — is now available here at SourceForge as free software, licensed under the GNU General Public Licence, version 3.
Lima VVA started its life back in 1994 as one of the first programs for Windows in its genre. Then named "LIMA 3.0 for Windows", it was a from-the-ground-up rewrite of the predecessor "LIMA 2". While the latter was based on ~20 thousand messy lines of BASIC and ran on MS-DOS, LIMA 3.0 for Windows was written from scratch in C++ based on Borland's Object Windows Library (OWL) for Windows. Lima VVA now consists of around 100 thousand lines of C++, plus installation code and integrated help system.
Since 2003, I have continued the development and maintenance of Lima VVA as an independent developer, with Rektangel AS as my marketing partner. However, over the years, competition in our market segment has increased. We have now fallen behind our rivals, and sales have stagnated. Hence, Rektangel AS has decided to end its role in the project at the end of this year.
By releasing Lima VVA as free software, I hope to ensure that the application continues to work well for its users, with the latest version of Windows and on the latest hardware. In time, I will release documentation, user guides and tutorials here as well. At least, that is the current plan.
