hey LB folks-- i know dirt isn't used very much these days. we've often talked about shutting down the site, but somehow, no one has come up with a time/plan for doing so. I'm not about to do that in this e-mail. But in the coming weeks, as debian's next release nears stability, i'd like use dirt as a guinea pig for the upgrade process from sarge to etch. The worst possible consequence would probably be for the upgrade process to damage or destroy user data on that machine. In this extremely unlikely event, we might even lose access to the machine for a little while. So: please make sure if you have any data on dirt that you want to keep, you've got a backup somewhere. I'll back up the svn repository and the cc.org database myself, so you don't need to worry about those pieces. If you have any strong objections to my using dirt this way (or you have data you want me to back up that you can't get to for some reason), please let me know. If you think this is a fine idea, please also let me know (i'm not sure if posting to this list is yelling into the abyss or not). Further e-mails about an eventual repurposing of dirt (what should happen to cc.org?) are welcome. But in the meantime, i'd like to test the upgrade process on a real, configured, burned-in sarge machine (for my own sake, and to contribute reports to the debian project), and dirt seems like a low-risk place for that to me. Regards, --dkg |

FYI - the MonkeyFunk offsite back continues to run - which backs up the entire database, and everything that is world readable in /home/cvsroot, /home/svnroot, and /opt. Not do say that you shouldn't make another backup though! > > If you have any strong objections to my using dirt this way (or you > have data you want me to back up that you can't get to for some > reason), please let me know. I think we should move cc to a static single html page on one of our shared servers and re-purpose dirt as a backup server for the us social forum (which should eventually be a dedicated server imho). jamie > > Regards, > > --dkg > > ------------------------------------------------------------------------- > Take Surveys. I was also considering it for the proposed new mf/pl svn/trac installation, but these things could possibly share space, if we get it all configured properly. --dkg |

Ok, so let's do this. Jamie, can you pick a server to put the static HTML page on? i'll write up a brief html page that covers the project, if no one else will. But you know what it's gonna look like: http://lair.fifthhorseman.net/~dkg/personal/cc.html --dkg PS amanda, despite what your homepage says, i don't think that velociraptors could actually fly. Perhaps the following diff would help: --- index.html.orig 2006-11-27 16:41:26.641404750 -0500 +++ index.html 2006-11-27 16:41:40.938298250 -0500 @@ -75,7 +75,7 @@ </ul> <p>If by some strange chance you came to this site looking for -information on vicous flying dinosours, please accept my +information on vicous dinosours (flying or otherwise), please accept my apologies. You'll find no such information here.</p> |

I just setup the static site and did a non-Matrix version here: http://cc.mayfirst.org/ What do you all think? DNS seems to be handled by dirt (a.ns.counterconvention.org) and the b record seems to be handled by an IP address that was managed by May First/People Link so long ago I don't even recognize it (but the reverse DNS still says it: davis.mayfirst.org). If people are fine with the page - I guess we could update the NS record on dirt to repoint it (chavez should respond to counterconvention.org and www.counterconvention.org). I think a good long term move would be to switch DNS control to a.ns.mayfirst.org and b.ns.mayfirst.org so we don't abandon the secondary name server again! jamie > > --dkg > > PS amanda, despite what your homepage says, i don't think that > velociraptors could actually fly.
