So I want to brush up on my C skills (been doing Java for the last six years).  I'd like to contribute to an open source project.  I've been running Ubuntu and using Liferea for a few years now, so I thought it'd be a good place to start.

I have the svn trunk checked out and building.  I've noticed that the unread count is wrong (at least on mine) so I thought that might be a good place to start.  Looking through the code I think the GTK API's will probably be more of a stumbling block than forgotten C knowledge (at least at first).  So I had just a couple quick questions.

What is a good environment for development? I'm looking at using vi with ctags for now, although I wouldn't mind something a little friendlier. Needs to be somewhat resource light as my laptop is a bit old.

Is there something better I should start on (as opposed to the unread count issue)?  FYI I only have one feed setup, it's a google reader feed, but I don't mind adding something for testing.

Could you point me at what files I should take a look at for this?

I'm not sure how much time I'll be able to devote to this, but it will certainly be some. Any help you can throw my way would be appreciated.
