I have downloaded the source rpm package, but I have found no way to unpack it. I have tried reading the rpm man page a few times, but I have not been able to find the secret yet. When I try to just install it rpm says it's not an installable package. None of my Linux-using friends have been able to help me either.
Is there any difference between 3.0.5 and 3.0.5-2? I want to unpack the latest source to see how it compiles on Solaris.

(I tried replying to you via email, but it bounced.)
I don't use linux these days for lifelines, so this
is but hearsay, but someone reported quite recently
on the mailing list that 3.0.5-2's rpm didn't work
so they reverted to 3.0.5-1, and were happy.
(At least, I think that is what they said.)
Hope that helps!

If you are not using Linux or a distribution of Linux that is not RPM based,
it is simpler to use the lifelines-*.tar.gz kit.
As for the naming convention, v3.0.5 is the LifeLines base version and
RPM files are v3.0.5-2 which mean the 2nd version of the RPMs. I didn't
build 3.0.5-1 quite right hence the 3.0.5-2.

I was trying to unpack the -2 src package on RedHat 3.2, but I guess I just don't know how to get rpm to work? rpm -i only gave me errors.
I tried downloading the -1 rpm's to a SuSE 7.0 system, but they gave me the same error message (package cannot be installed or something like that).
In the end I fetched the .tar.gz package and it built in seconds on SuSE. I have used LL on Solaris for several years, but this version doesn't compile out of the box on Solaris 8. I'll look into it and see where it needs some fixing.

Red Hat 3.2 is ancient history. My first Red Hat in 1995 was 4.2. If you try to use a 5+ year old OS and a new application I'm not surprised if you have problems (no matter what combination of OS and application you choose).
