[libxml++] Library not found

Hi I am relatively new to linux programming so bear with my stupidity.
 
 When I try to include the library:
 #include <libxml++/libxml++.h>
 
 I get an error that the file cannot be found.
 
 I checked and it is located in:
 /usr/include/libxml++-2.6/libxml++/libxml++.h
 
 As well as
 /usr/local/include/libxml++-2.6/libxml++/libxml++.h
 
 Any suggestions on how I can get the compiler to recognize the proper location of the header files?
