The currently available versions of Ubuntu (7.04) and NeoOffice integreate libwps for easy importing of Microsoft Works documents. Also, Dell just announced they are going to ship Ubuntu soon, so before long, assumeably you can also get libwps from Dell.
However, the mainline OpenOffice.org continues to drag its feet with different situations presented in the Issue Tracker vs a discussion in the mailing list.
libwps 0.1.0 was released today. It does a decent job pulling text and basic formatting out of most Microsoft Works word processor documents.
Also, several days ago I had received word libwps was integrated into OpenOffice.org in Feisty Fawn's Ubuntu. Thanks to Fridrich Strba for integrating libwps with OpenOffice.org and putting it into ooo-build, and of course, thanks to the folks at Ubuntu too.

The libwps code is just in the beginning process of getting into OpenOffice.org, so end users cannot yet download a working copy.
AbiWord developer Dominic Lachowicz e-mailed me this morning telling me it took him only 30 minutes to add libwps to AbiWord. When I know where to download binaries, I will post another news item.
