Yes you need to use libusb git. But for libusb-compat,
you do not need to use the git version since the few fixes
above the released version is not that important . You
should be able to build libusb-compat-0.1.3 version from
Sourceforge.

I understand that. Macports can be very intrusive. Homebrew
is less so but still may cause problems if you mixed it with
other things. On the other hand, dealing with everything
yourself is also troublesome and time consuming.
