AFAIR, it was $500 p.a.

When your certificate expires, you cannot load the driver anymore. (But
you can let VeriSign or someone else "timestamp" the signature, so it
does not expire. But this costs, again.)

In the meantime, MS also allows for other certificates but Verisign.
Nevertheless, the problem itself remains.
