For decoding I personally use my gmerlin-avdecoder library. It's not well
known. But for me it has the advantage, that I can add all crazy features
I want :)

For *encoding* video files, I use libavformat and libavcodec.
I guess that libavformat is also good at decoding nowadays, but when I started
my projects (around 2001/2002) it certainly wasn't.
