Hi Tim et al,

I'm looking at giving this a go with the long term view of replacing the 
use of the Windows QuickTime API to unify Linux + Windows platform code 
for reading and writing.

It's been a while since the last post on this thread, though - any 
updates on this issue?  I'll take Burkhard's advice on MinGW as a 
starting point.
