Slowly drifting off to sleep (internet in the bed, man I love gadgets), but just wondering whatcha using your 888 for, some project, fun, or both? The plan is 3 accelerometers and 3 gyros. Sound and video will (obviously) not come from the phidget... From sound we can get back to RPM (haven't actually done this except to play with baudline), which means we can plot uncalibrated torque curves (dyno charts). Comparing accelerometer data with other drivers (and unfortunately, usually other cars) can reveal a lot about your driving... e.g. are you getting the car out to it's limits (and as importantly, holding it there)? Data from an off the shelf accelerometer is (in plenty) at http://traktime.ca/ ... But if you play with that enough you rapidly learn that integrating an accelerometer to get speed simply isn't accurate enough. And car body roll and pitch is significant enough to make comparisons between cars difficult ... e.g. 1 lateral G on the meter in my stiffened and lowered miata is more than a lateral G in my friends old Civic with a 12 year old bagged out suspension (because his 1 G has more body roll and thus more of a gravitational componenet)... with luck, piezo gyros can help in both cases... as well as making plotting a "course driven" more accurate... There is of course no limit to what you can measure and record. Throttle position is measured by the car's ECU and available via the obd-ii port with the right interface hardware. Having steering wheel position (via an encoder), and steering torque (via a strain gage) would be way cool too... but at this point I'm rambling :-) The major improvement for this project is that the accelerometer should become wireless, being able to send the data from the run to a base station via 802.11 ethernet, which will be a massive improvement over the current system where I have to grab the meter, run to a laptop, and dump the data over a serial port, then run it back to the next car that I know well enough to collect data from... but having sound will also be a plus. I have all the core equipment now ... except maybe a mic suitable for the project, and there's a firewire camera in transit... the Epia-M9000 motherboard, case with 12 Volt DC-DC powersupply, complact flash -> IDE adapter, and of course the 888 interface kit and phidgets accelerometer card are here.... -Tom > > > On Fri, 27 Jun 2003 2:00AM -0600, Tom Brown wrote: > > On 27 Jun 2003, Jack Strohm wrote: > > > >> On Fri, 2003-06-27 at 00:23, Tom Brown wrote: > >> > >> > I see Jack on the commit list is working on an 'LP_8WAY_SERVO' I'm > >> trying > >> > to get the 888 interface kit up and running... anyhow, is anyone > >> around > >> > >> Note to self, never respond to email at 2 in the morning, please > >> ignore previous email.
