Could a plugin for GIMP to load and save PGF encoded images be created? Similar to the one already available for Photoshop http://www.xeraina.ch/pgf/pgfdownload.html

In 2008/2009 some students tried to implement a GIMP plugin. Their plugin didn't work very well, so a more professional should try this.
