There were patches accepted in the past to ease SWIG generation of python 
wrappers, but I don't know what came of it.

Not really.  The API is really old school in design, but there simply isn't a 
compelling enough reason to change it considering the limited development 
activity.  Some fields may be added from time to time, but that's pretty much 
it.
