#31 Syntax error with SHARED=1 option

On Ubuntu 11.10, I run following commands:
sudo make SHARED=1
sudo make SHARED=1 install

Then, I obtain this error:
/bin/sh: Syntax error: word unexpected (expecting ")")
make: *** [install] Erreur 2
