Distributions like Debian likely have security patches for 6b but the Independent JPEG Group (Guido Vollbeding) is definitely not supporting it. While it was used for a great many years, 6b is an antique version and should no longer be used. Volunteers have produced updated versions of formal IJG releases and they are available as lettered versions at http://www.ijg.org/files/. Many people/distributions are using TurboJPEG, which is not supported by IJG. There are other variants of libjpeg which are also not supported by IJG.
