Hi list, I'm trying to build snort-idmef on Redhat Fedora Core 4: - snort-2.3.3.tar.gz - libidmef-1.0.2-alpha.tar.gz - snort-idmef-plugin-2.0.0alpha.tar.gz I've followed the instructions in INSTALL (e.g. apply diffs, copy spo_idmef files and run autoconf) but my configure breaks. i.e. ./configure --enable-idmef --enable-ps-list gives ---snip--- ./configure: line 9207: syntax error near unexpected token `LIBIDMEF,' ./configure: line 9207: ` PKG_CHECK_MODULES (LIBIDMEF, libidmef >= 1.0.2-alpha, LIBS="$LIBS $LIBIDMEF_LIBS" CFLAGS="$CFLAGS $LIBIDMEF_CFLAGS")' ---snip--- Anyone come across this error before? Hi Dave, Couple of things. 1) Make sure you are using libidmef 0.6.3 for the current Snort plugin 2) You will get an "libidmef library (idmef) not found ...." message if any of the libraries dependencies are also not found, i.e. libntp, or libxml2. Make sure those are both installed, and use the --with-libxml2-libraries=, and --with-libntp-libraries= configure tags. 3) Make sure /usr/local/lib is in your /etc/ld.so.conf file (if your os has one). If it's not in there, add the line and run "ldconfig". If you are still having problems, contact lib...@li.... Just FYI, the IDMEF plugin for Snort 1.9 has been 95% done for quite some time now. The development team has simply been busy on other projects. We believe the plugin will be finished within the next two weeks. Hi All, I will be using LibIdmef-0.7.2 for parsing IDMEF Messages(Alert/Heratbeat). For this I will be using 'get_idmef_message( )' or 'get_idmef_message_from_file( )' APIs to parse. I able to successfully complete the parsing of IDMEF by using 'get_idmef_message_from_file( )' , but, have problem in using 'get_idmef-message()' . Problem is in the parsing of 'Alert' element, instead of getting current element name to process as 'Alert' , it is showing current element name as 'text', following is portion of debug output near the error: version of xml doc 1 no of alert 1(parse_message) next element is text -- calling parse_alert() error parsing alert not a valid IDMEF-Message But I able to successfully print document contents by using 'xmlDebugDocument()' and current node by using 'xmlDebugDumpNode()' API's of 'libxml2'. However I am not getting any errors in parsing the same 'Alert' message with 'get_idmef_message_from_file' . Could you please any body suggest reason for this? Thank you, Rajesh |

Good morning Joe, I checked the output of ./configure and realized that it was giving an error related to the libxml2 includes. That's because I installed the RPM package of libxml2, which does not create the includes files. So I went ahead and downloaded the zip file of libxml2 and reinstalled it. Then I recompiled the libidmef with the appropriate directory of the libxml2 includes. Everything seems to be ok. Thank you very much for your help. Hello Ricardo, Sorry for the message delay, I was on holiday this past week. Glad to hear you are interested in working with IDMEF. I think I know where the problem is. The current IDMEF plugin requires libidmef 0.6.3 and not 0.7.X. A newer version of the plugin that is compatible with libidmef 0.7.2 (with IDXP incorporated) is being developed, but has been delayed due to complications with IDXP. Ryan Ripken is heading that effort. He may be able to give you a better time frame then I. Please let us know if you run into further problems. Hello, First thing, you need to use libidmef-0.6.3 with the current IDMEF plugin for Snort. An enhanced version of the plugin is being developed for use with the most recent version of libidmef (0.7.1). Make sure you remove the 0.7.1 libraries manually before you install 0.6.3 as "make install" will not overwrite more recent versions of the library. If you have any more problems, feel free to let us know! The libidmef development team is pleased to announce the release of libidmef 0.7.1. This release is compliant with version 0.7 of the IDMEF specification. Notable changes include: + Addition of IDMEF parsing and c struct -> xml generation code (courtesy of NAI) + Removal of the libntp dependency + Additional cross platform compatibility + IDMEF version 0.7 compliance We have also moved the source tree to SourceForge, and have created two mailing lists to better serve user and developer needs. You can visit the project homepage for more information. I'd also like to point out that we have added a few new members to the team, and expect to pick up the development pace in the months to come. Thank you to all who have contributed to the project already.
